First shot at horse manure / straw substrate - Actinomyces?
    #5588517 - 05/03/06 11:59 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Hi,

This is my first attempt at a horse manure/straw substrate, and I'm very excited, but have 2 questions that I hope can be answered.

The manure/straw mix was home pastured and colonized with a large amount of birdseed spawn.

Everything's going great, but I'm concerned about some white chalky/plastery/spotty areas that I hope are not contamination.
They are small spots on the top that look like small white paint spatters. They are not mycelium.

I've done some reading in Stamets / Chilton's book and I think they may be "Actinomyces". However, I did not find a real answer as to if they are harmful and if so, how do I stop them, and will this substrate still fruit?

Here's the pic:

What I'm talking about is the little white spotty stuff.

Please advise.

Also, 80% of the manure/straw is colonized, should I case now or wait till 100%?

Thank you.
