First timers hunting in South Island, NZ
    #5587795 - 05/03/06 09:04 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I'm going to be spending May and June traveling around the South Island with a friend. Finding and experiencing psilocybes together is top among our list of things to do. We have never hunted wild mushrooms but have both dropped shrooms before. In hopes of not dying, our plan is to pretty much stick to things growing in cow and sheep pastures that are extremely identifiable with the aid of the Stamets book. So I guess my questions are, in order,

  • Are we going to die?
  • Are we going to get shot for mucking around in someone's pasture?
  • Are we going to have any luck?

Any thoughts / tips on the matter would be appreciated. I realize the typical advice for newbies is "always hunt with an experienced mycologist", but unfortunately that's not really an option since neither of us has ever even been to NZ before. Thanks!

i would suggest not hunting mushrooms for the purpose of eating until you've read enough to know the answer to your first and third questions...

if you knew what you were looking for you would not have those questions.  and we have no way of answering any of them with any degree of certainty anyway, soooo ermmm, hit the books, yeh...

To further your hopes of not dying, before eating any mushrooms you find I'd take clear photos of them and post the pictures on this site along with the required information (habitat, spore print color etc. etc.) so the experts can give you the thumbs up or thumbs down.

Mate,

(1) It will be too cold for the mushrooms you are looking for in cow poops. They would be Psilocybe Cubensis (Golden Tops) and Copelandia Cyanascens (Blue Meanies). They grow through the warmer months after rains. During the winter months you would be better off hunting Psilocybe Subearuginosa in NZ. That is what I am hoping to do (for the first time) this winter in Aus.

(2) If you find a mushroom growing directly out of cow poop or heavily manured soil, that has a whitish stem, gray/brown gills, bruises a definite blue and has a purple/brown/black spore print, the chance of it being toxic is slim to none. That doesn't mean you should indescriminately eat anything that vaguely matches that description though! Always get a positive ID if you're inexperienced.

a) You will only die if you fuck up.

b) You should look in cow pastures, but not directly on the patties. In the South Island liberty caps grow mostly on soil that has been "nutrified" by cow shit etc. in the past.

c) You could get shot at.

d) Think about how big a mushroom is then think about how big the South Island is.

Haha this thread cracks me up

I dont know much about the actives around the south island - I know of them. But I'm now completely sweet on Subaeruginosa id, I dont have much idea about the others. Goldtops aka ^subs are what you probably want to look for.
Obviously dont eat anything you find without posting it here.

These are found in woodchips - and are strong. They bruise blue very easily. Things that helped me - hollow, very white stem, wierd fibery feel to it.

I dont think you'll get shot at - there really isnt any need to trespass too blatenly anyway- there's enough public parks etc around.
