I apologize for the COMMON newbie ?, but i have read up and looked in the forums, and i guess the explanations confuse me. but i was hoping someone could explain in english to it's simplest terms what 50/50 is, i think it means half verm. and half watever (peatmoss, perlite, coir, etc.) but if so, ive also searched on the steps/ procedures and every thing i read seems to have something different, so i was hoping, if someone could explain to me their tec. on what steps u take in making the casing. Or if u dont want to give me ur tech specifically i was at least hoping when I put down the 50/50 mix and what before that and after and so on. As i said before, i apologize for asking a common ? but I need a explanation i guess simple enough for me to understand, sorry for stupidity but im new at this and dont wanna fuck it up.

50/50 referees to the casing layer.
The case consist of a spawn (WBS/PF) that is spawned to a substrate (hpoo/compost/coir)and then top with a casing layer.
Now there is a lot of conflicting info, cause there is more then one way to do it. And to make it worse your asking a room full of chiefs...lol
I use 50/50 coco coir/ vermiculite, but I would rather use peat...

Hi shroomhead, I've heard of people using sphagnum peat moss, but have never seen pics. I use reed sedge peat, it looks like black dirt. You can get it at a farm supply, 5-6$ for a 40-50lb. bag. You should also be able to pick up a big bag of verm there for MUCH less than what Home-depot/Lowes charges.
I've used: 4 parts verm 4 parts peat 1 part crushed oyster shell .5 parts calcium carbonate.
However, I'm kinda leaning towards the opinion that the crushed shell is about useless. The chunks are too big to be of much benefit. So, next time I do a casing, I'll use this:
4 parts verm 4 parts peat 1 part calcium carbonate
Many of the old hands attain optimal PH using hydrated lime, and then add calcium carbonate as a buffer. I haven't done it yet, and don't know how much the yield would be affected. Hydrated lime is potent. if you use it, you'll need a PH meter to make sure you don't raise the PH too high. If you use only calcium carbonate, you can't use too much as it won't raise the PH past 7.5-8.
Anyway, powdered oyster shell, and or high calcium lime (calcium carbonate) can be found at the farm supply, and possibly garden centers. I haven't found anything comparable at Lowes/Home Depot.
Farm supplys are quite handy, verm, peat, calcium, all kinds of grains, straw...
Final note: When purchasing limestone, avoid "brominated" or any other kind that lists magnesium at levels over 2-3%. I originally made the mistake of asking for crushed lime, and now I have a bag of lime, and no garden. I went back and asked for calcium carbonate and they brought me the stuff I needed. Hope this helps.

Also, if you can't find calcium carbonate: crushed eggshell = calcium carbonate.

Hydrated lime is what you want for a casing layer. It goes to work right away instead of needing time to break down. Use the lime at the rate of 5% of the amount of peat by volume. In other words, a cup of your hydrated lime for each 20 cups of peat. Add gypsum at a ten percent rate. Use 1/2 the amount of blood meal that you do lime. Mix all the dry ingredients except the verm together well, then bring to field capacity. Bring the verm to field capacity, then mix it in with the peat. Pasteurize and use.
2.5% bloodmeal 5% hydrated lime 10% gypsum
1/2 cup hydrated lime 10 cups peat 1/4 cup bloodmeal 1 cup gypsum
Mix well with water to field capacity Add 10 cups of verm at field capacity pasteurize And Voila!
