Damn! Just found out today there's an organized fungi foray the day after I get back from holiday at my prized spring fungi hunting grounds!!!!
Thinking about going down there the evening before the foray and picking the place dry
What do you guys think???

go down there and grab enough to get you by for a while, leave them the rest. as long as they're responsible pickers the spot will be producing again after the next rain, it's not like it will be spoiled for the season.

Thats the thing though.
If I leave a load there their going to think the spots good and check it regularly. If they find nothing of interest there or just the odd couple they probably won't bother coming back!

I'd probably go out there and try to see what I could find before a bunch of others pick everything. If an organized group came to hunt around my patches, I'd probably get jealous!
How is the St Georges mushroom? Never had it myself.. Have you tried it? If you have how was it prepared?

Yeah, St Georges are great. They dry well (still got some from last year) and go great in just about any dish that calls for mushrooms
I particularly like them in omelets or with chicken or fish in a creamy sauce

Ya I noticed that foray on their website while back while providing a link for someone from Yorkshire seeking edibles from their (your) area......good to know one of my links might of actually helped out for finding the kind edibles....

EDIT: WHOOPS....accidentally posted this one before done....thought I was sending it to preveiw.....I was wondering about that foray because I reviewed back a little their past forays dates and mushrooms found (East Fungus Group I think ?)or maybe the other.....provided links for both......and on all their lists they never found a Morel and was the first time they had scheduled a May foray.....so I was wondering if this might of been a foray especially for Morels????
Now I see it was a foray for Amatoxins Calocybes!
EDIT: Didnt mean to post again....meant to edit the other.....all kinds a probs....
I'd agree.....pick it dry.....better you do it properly than leave it to the marauders.....someone mentioned responsible forayers.....no such thing as a group.....one or two irresponsible can devastate.....forays are search, kick, rototill, destroy, and take no prisoners......forays remind me sometimes of cuttin down the tree to get the fruit
Plus they'll introduce 20 new people to your patch.....and theyll tell two friends....and they'll tell two friends.....and they

Nah, it's not the East Fungus Group. I think most of their forays are close to Lincolnshire, a bit too far away for me.
Turns out I know the mycologist who's heading the foray and arranged today to attend the hunt!
Should be amusing picking the place dry then joining them the following morning!

No, the spots not well known at all. I've been picking there for a few years now and have not once run into another mushroom hunter.

No, I've not heard him mention it before either. His favorite haunts are many miles away from mine.
There were EIGHTY people that went on this guys last excursion. I don't want that many people getting to know my most productive turf if you know what I mean

Set some bear traps under the leaves. That'll teach em' Nothing like some broken legs and tetanus to say "This is my area, back off."

While your on the walk you should casually drop tidbits of info about how the area has been know to house "undesirables", local gangs ect use it for a hide out - "they say there's a few bodies out here - I used to come here for dog walks but one time I was confronted by two very scary gentlemen". "I havent had the nerve to come here since".
Haha, you could have some fun. Perhaps orgainise a few rallying shots and an ambush with a couple mates.
