old jars still good for casing?

i have some jars that have been sitting around for a couple months (i think we started them back in late november/early december) and they have been fully colonized for quite some time. i cased them yesterday and the mycellium looked a little darker than normal. it was obvious that it was old and probably weakened. the thing that worries me is that there was an unusual smell coming from the jars. i still notice it in the tray but it isnt an overwhelming smell, its just there. there is absolutely no sign of contamination so im leaning towards the smell being from the old brown rice flour but i dont know. anyone have any ideas?

as long as it doesnt smell really ripe and spoiled youve got a chance BRF does give off a strange smell after a while, usually it goes away soon after you open the jars.

after a few rounds in front of the fan the smell has been rapidly dissipating, so i think im good. mycellium is starting to break through on the top, but at this point it kinda looks like cobweb mold the way it's emerging. of course, this is just me panicking as i always do. thank you for your boost of confidence during such a crisis
