my guess would be spontaneous combustion of methane gas.

The high nitrogen content, is producing a lot of heat.

usually things start burning when they are lit on fire. it can be remedied by putting it out with water.
not trying to be a smartass but sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. who knows, neighborhood kids thought it would be funny to light a big pile of poo on fire?

There was a show that touched briefly on this sort of thing that was on the Discovery Channel not too long ago. As the bacteria break the poo down into more basic components, heat is created. Most compost piles have a very high core temperature. It's likely that heat set some dried plant matter smouldering throughout the pile.
It's probably not much more than a ton of smoke and a terrible odor. At any rate, grab up a few buckets of water and soak that bad boy down. Or better yet, get a supersoaker.

But if you use a super soaker, do NOT give in to the temptation to fill it with lighter fluid. I did once.....

it was probably fermenting under the hot sun and began to flame up due to methane gas getting hot in certain areas.

i would also go with spontanious combustion. a compost in the sun will get about 140F so that is my best guess.

ehhhh, it's not really spontaneous if you know the cause was from decomposition creating heat inside the composting poop...spontaneous combustion is when old ladies sitting in their chairs suddenly explode into flames just above the knees
