make my rye casings? I have 20qts of rye colonizing and have built a greenhouse in my closet now im wondering how deep I should make the casings. Im planning on mixing a shit ton of verm into the rye for moisture so the stuff is going to be part verm.
Im thinking 4 inches of rye, adding 2 inches of moist verm then mixing and casing with one more inch of verm. You think thats over kill or going to flush like madd?

personally i would mix the vermiculite with the rye if that is going to be your method. i would use at least 5-6 quarts per casing. i used 2 quarts in a casing and the fruits are just tiny as hell. nothing got over 2 inches tall.

This is funny cause I say dont go beyond 3-4 including the layer.
I hear at 5 inches the case could 'suffocate' from the lack of oxygen.
There are always to many chefs in the kitchen.
So in the end your on your own
Now how much do you need LxWxH, then you need to convert it Gals, Cups.....or you can use thishttp://www.unitcalc.com/calc_vap.php

just remember that it takes energy to colonize the verm you are tossing in and since verm has no nutrients its not getting any energy back. so its a trade off. you are using a scarce resource to get another one, that being water. at some point the cost of using more energy will not be made up with having that extra water. so its a balancing act.
edit. also rye will need less verm then wbs. it just holds water better i hear. ive enver used rye myself but with wbs i put in a good sum of verm but i don't measure or anything.

Making the substrate layer thicker wont give you a much bigger yield. For me 2* as much substrate gave 20% more. Thats for the first flush only. More substrate does mean you can get more flushes and have a higher yield on later flushes because not all nutes will be spent on the first flush. This can be a good or a bad thing. If you like to harvest a lot at once then I'd make as many casings as you can. If you like to harvest over time I'd make a few big casings. Probably all together both versions will have the same total yield. But only if your patient enough to take your casings through 4-5 flushes (if you used thick substrate layers). Also instead of adding vermiculite you can add some coir which will get colonized very quickly and will also give extra water. I do this as a water reservoir. I use a 90%/10% coir/verm mix to the rye in a ratio of about 10:1 rye coir. mostly to add moisture... mix it in good and put a casing layer ontop of that. For me it works good.
