UV lights

i have not set up my box yet, but i want to use a UV florescent light for its germicidal effects. i have heard that the light kills not only bacteria but also fungal spores. i still want to use the light to keep my box clean when the spores or shrooms are not in the box. has anyone else tried to use UV lighting to set up a clean box?

yes but they have to be very closley monitored and enclosed. if you even flash the light around you mushies they will die or mutate. depends on the amount of the blast. i have a bench set up to block all light from going anywhere but the box/bench area. good tool but powerful.

i don't have pix of that on here, and my lab is accross the state at the moment but a simple bench with high sides and a top work well. also you want the open end of the box to face away from anything that could possibly be undesireabley effected.
here is one from myco supply but they don't have sides on it. i assume that it is in a lab area and not in a spawn room or fruiting room.

Why would you want the box to be clean when mushies are NOT in the box? Simply wash with soap and water before use. You did not define 'box' so we have no idea whether you're talking about a glove box or fruiting chamber. Either way, sterility is not necessary for either one. The only purpose of a glovebox is to prevent drafts while you work. Gloveboxes need not be sterile, and I never use lysol, etc., in mine. Fruiting chambers also need not be sterile. RR

I'm sorry. the box is at the moment is about 5'x3' i could easily use it for both by dividing it in 2. i have every intention of hand cleaning the inside of the box with disinfectant, but i want the light to keep things nice and clean so that as soon as I'm ready to put what ever in it all i have to do is turn off the light. i would also store any equipment ill be using latter under the light.

hmm not necessary for you perhaps, but i live with spastics, filthy animals, filthy fat people and old people, mycellium infections are frequent for me and i really found that this lamp helps.
Im talking about using it only to sterilise the area tools and air in which i will do injections or cut open cakes when trying to isolate specific mycellium, i dunno if its going to be useful for everyone, but for me its the difference between having like 10% infections (i rekon that contamination in the one instance i had it using my current methodology was from a contaminated spore print) and being lucky if i get half of them to fruiting.
any hoot can only say what i see
