hi
i have just completed my steerer, and its so simple, and so cheap that i think you sould try it!
needed:
1 big computer fan with speed control 4 screws that fits in the fan's four hole 2 magnetic steerer stick's (original) 1 cd case 1 12v power supply for the fan 1 little piece of bluetech
stick one of your magnetic cticks on the center of the fan. screw in the 4 scews. the smaller part of the cd case goes on the top of the screws, adjust the scews until the cover is as close as pissible, but not touching the case.
plug in, adjust the speed have fun!

well, unless it's gonna be in front of a flowhood for the whole time it takes to grow and mature liquid mycelium, all sorts of crap from the air is gonna drop in and contaminate your project.

I'm pretty sure he's showing the jar as an example only. I seriously doubt he intends on leaving his liquid cultures completely uncovered.

of yourse its only for demonstration!do you think i would be such a fool?:) anyways speaking of wich its possible to grow in honey without lids...key is the constant peroxide level, and mycelia injecion. but that would be too much work to keep the perxide level constant in the liquid.
wronguy: thanks for expecting i am not a fool:D

what is a piece of bluetech? I tried google but all I got were companies and their stocks. Also, do you know how many rpms that spins at? Looks pretty cool, I might have to try that if I get some free time.

bluetech is like a sticky plasticine. they use it to stic posters on the wall and etc...its just a quick way to stic your magnet on the fan.you need something like this since theese magnets are covered with a special plastic thats not ggod for gluing.
the rpm is what you decide(i adjust it just to see a little vortex on the top), you can go down to very slow and teh max will be the fans max, its like 1500rpm.
there is one little problem, if you adjust your fan to run slow, and there is a power loss, the fan wont start again, and you need to help it to start by knocking it a little. i am trying to figure that problem out
my one is runing since 24 hours, but even now i can clearly see mycleia growth (i injected a small amount, around 0,5ml of mycelia)

Nine bucks on EBay? Not too shabby. But that's nine bucks worth of beer yr asking me to forego. Muchly I prefer cheaper or free.
Can I get clear on this?:
The second 'magnetic stirrer stick' is inside the jar, no?
How is a computer fans speed controlled without a rheostat? Is there a knob or something to fiddle on them?
What is a _magnetic stirring bar_? A toy store plastic coated bar magnet? Something to buy from a scientific supply store? E-Bay?

I think the idea of using a homemade magnetic stirrer is not the best one. The cost saved is offset by the danger of using a cobbled together machine. Calvera's design is pretty decent and safe-looking though. I think it would be foolish to use an AC fan or something like that. I wonder if a filtered bubbler or a shaker table wouldn't be better.
Here is a site with pretty good prices: http://www.cynmar.com/index.php?cPath=99_220_88
Stir bars cost a couple dollars ($1-$4) depending on size.

I'm looking at Cynmar and at Ebay: Prices not less than a hundred bucks, cresting at about 300 for a stirrer unit.
I think the homemade thingee is looking pretty good.

Yeah, $9 bucks on ebay is a steal. I just sold two stirrers on ebay. Each went for over $45.
Awesome thread calavera. Deffinitely one to put under favorites.

Check this out... $20.00 stirrer. It's pretty different looking. It looks like it's made out of a wooden block with a plastic lid on top of it!

i use two magnetic sticks, theye are from a chem lab. one is in the jar, the other is sticked on the center of the fan. i have a small potmeter (variable resistance) it goes from 0 to 500ohms, altough i only supply the fan with 10 volts - the resitance voltage.

It would be better with an AC plug. The description only mentions AA batteries, which would suck to have to constantly replace. I ordered one of the air powered stirrers to see how well it works. The one they have is going for $13.

if ther eis no ac plug, that is no problem, since you can buy an adapter and soldering it to the batery conetor, so no batery needed to run it anymore.
anyway its a very simple machine, the time you use to browse the web, (find your supply, order it, pay it, receive it etc etc..) is enough to build one, + its fun!
peace:)

I didn't see this information on the website, but in the print catalog it claims... "will spin continuously for more than 3 days on a fresh AA battery". That sounds pretty cheap. You could also rechargeables. Or it would be easy enough to wire in a plug for an AC adapter.
