still wondering if i'm wasting my time
    #558482 - 02/21/02 11:37 AM (21 years, 9 months ago)

I went into the tree huggin hippy health food store today and found an organic cereal called Red River Cereal
It has cracked wheat, cracked rye, and flax seed in it and i was wondering if it would be a good thing to replace half the brf in my next batch of pf jars with this cereal
If not I'm gonna have to eat the healthy crap

well since no one else is gonna reply i guess i might as well
i used the cereal 50/50 with organic dark rye flour in a tupperware container (12X6X1.5) and sterilized it in the microwave for 8 minutes then inoculated with cambodian mycellium water (honey tek done with corn syrup instead of honey worked well) so hopefully everything works out alright

if anyone has any advice to add to what i did or criticism about it please feel free to reply to the post

can't learn unless u are willing to fail

How exactly was your microwave sterilisation procedure?

for the microwave sterilization after i mixed the substrate in a bowl then put it in the container i put a thin (.5 inch) layer of dry vermiculite on the top and microwaved for 8 min on high with the top slightly cracked. then i let it cool for about 20 min inside the microwave, opened the door and closed the top. then i set the container aside for about 2 hours till it was cool to the touch and inoculated using the oven tek and massive amounts of alchohol (for me and for sterility) and lysol

yeah i just used the microwave

i read it in a tek that i can't find right now but was recomended by a friend
i'll post the url when i find it

i'm not to concerned about the containers because i used the honey tek so i only used 1cc from 4 different syringes to make 4 jars of mycellium water and inocullated 4 containers using brf as a substrate with each different spore type and the 2 with the red river cereal using the cambodian spores which seemed to grow mycellium faster than the other 3
i used 15cc of mycellium water/container
the spores i used were: PESA, Mex-Cub, Puerto Rican, and Cambodian
if it doesn't start to turn out in a week i'll just toss it and do 4 seperate pf teks using new mycellium water that i started last night

Well, i ran some tests using my microwave that has 800 W of power, and it evaporated more than 10 ml of water each minute from a jar. So if you had your tupperware in the MW for 8 minutes, it will have at least 80 ml water less than at the beginning, which is not good....

hmmm good point
but wouldn't the 15 cc's of mycellium water replace some of that?
the containers seem to be moist enough though in fact i was sort of worried about them being too wet

did u have your container covered at all when u tested the water loss?
the cover was saturated to the heavy drip stage when i was done microwaving them so alot of the lost moisture was dripped back into the substrate
