horse poo trays incubating...one might be spoiling
    #5584756 - 05/03/06 08:17 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

I have two large trays (18" x 14" x 4") with tenn stud and two small metal bowls with tennstud and spawn.  In each tray i added 3 quarts of colonized wbs.  It has been 4 or 5 days now since I prepared them.  For the first 48 hours there was a nasty stink coming from all 4 containers.  Now the stink is gone in all but one, which happens to be the one colonizing the slowest.  So I am assuming that the other 3 overcame the bacterial infestation and are on their way to providing lots of fruits.  However the one that's stinkin' and lagging in terms of colonization is one of the large trays.  I took the tray out of the incubator and isolated it in one of my dresser drawers...a good 10 degree drop.  Is there anything else I can do to help the myc win this?

unless you are trying to fruit the ten degree drop is usless and will colonize slower.

i've had a mexican casing just stink to high heaven until the day of harvest.

this is my first time using manure. i am not sure what an earthy smell is like when it comes to manure. honestly it smells like shit...i guess that is earthy. but tons of bacteria reside in shit...at least human shit.
Here's another question...does ruminents' shit contain as much bacteria as a human's?

Horses aren't ruminants  They have a single stomach. Cows on the other hand are ruminants. I am guessing they would likely have less bacteria since with 4 stomachs and repeated digestion the body's own facilities are able to do a much more comprehensive job of digestion as compared to an animal with 1 stomach. Don't quote me on that though.. i'll check with a friend who's a pre-med major and see if she knows

lol i'm pre-med i should know this. Let me blow the dust off of my bio book.
Wiggles that makes perfect sense. Less need for symbiosis (or less opportunity) if the ruminant stomach can digest the plant matter.

an earthy smell is almost like sweet dirt. if you can smell a lot of ammonia (horse piss) then it needs to be leached again and dried in the sun. so it shouldn't smell like a barn in there but there will be a slight smell that shouldn't be so unpleasant.

i had to releach some horse poo this winter because it was all frozen to the ground as soon as it came out of the horses ass. i thought the first time would do it but when i was beginning to cook it i could still smell some ammonia. after you work with it a few times you will know the perfect smell for poo.

you should be fine. I forgot about a tray of colonizing Hpoo and left it in an incubator for about a month. Yesterday I took it out and there were 2 large shrooms and a bunch of aborts. These had grown in complete darkness, low humidity, and 80 degree temps. My point being is that cubies on Hpoo are fairly resistant to contams and WANT TO GROW. I moved the casing to a FC and hopefully it will still be ok and fruit somthing.

Yeah, an earthy smell is defiinitely not unpleasant. I did two similar trays of horse poo 2 days ago and have experienced no foul smells whatsoever. In fact, it doesn't even emit an odor unless you basically stick your face in it.

Don't put large trays, especially horse manure trays into any type of incubator. Use room temperature.
