Red tint?
    #558460 - 02/21/02 01:12 PM (15 years, 6 months ago)

(I posted this on another board as well, and thought it may be helpful to have it here)

OK, so here is the situation:
My first batch of mushies is going great, and everything is just peachy. I innaculated a second batch with the same spores, but this time I left the substrate a little looser (less packed), and the substrate may have consisted of a little different frequency of brown rice flower to vermiculite due to the fact I just eyed the measurements. This second batch was started about a week or two later than the first, and brought up with the first batch. Now comes the weird stuff. The mycelium on the second bacth has a slightly red tint. It is not just one or two, but every single one is identical. It is very faint but definately present, and the color is even throughout, not splotchy or anything. The second batch was innauculated with three different syringes, two that had all been previously used and stored, and one new. Like I said, this batch was kept with the first batch for a long while, and none of the first ones have shown any sign of the "red tint". I decided to quarantine the second batch about a week ago (it was started about 3 weeks to a month ago), and I have just been keeping an eye on them. I do not detect any noticable odor or anything like that. Could this be contamination? Help my babies!

Pop?  Well, anyway, I confirmed that this is not lipstick mold.  It seems that it may be clearing up as the mycelium spreads.  I wish I could take a picture, but no camera.  :frown:  Anyway, keep the guesses coming!  I hope everything will clear up!

I just had to toss all of my jars because of that damned red tint. It started out small in all my jars, and didn't spread, so I thought it was just rust or something. Looked at my jars today, and every one of them had bright red/orange spots.

I am still confused just because when mine started, they started with the red tint on all the mycelium. As they grew, it grew too. It's not something that spread or began somewhere, it was just there as a part of them. I still have them quarantined and will keep you all posted. Good day!

Sad News!  Today I looked at the jars, and they were looking somewhat dried out, and there had been very little growth in the past few days.  I caught an aweful smell coming from one of the jars, and upon further investigation, found that all the jars stunk.  :frown:

Poor little guys!

They have since been tossed...

On the brighter side of things, the first group are doing very well!  The PF's have begun to fruit, along with one hawiian.  The mazatecs are still waiting to pin...

Sounds like you already resolved the situation, but it would have been interesting to see a close up pic of the early stages of contamination;
Certain molds, Mucor and Rhizopus in my experience, have a cube mycelium-like character in the early stages of growth--about the only way to suspect it is in its rate of growth which is faster.  These two will often show their true colors [which is often reddish, but not always] only when their density of growth is high enough.
Good rule of thumb--anytime you see color in mold growth, that is especially high concentrations of mature conidia [mold spore structures].
Pitch with care, and try try again :smile:

It seems the same thing is now happening to 12 eight oz. jars I inoculated 6 days ago with Mazatec spores. Where I expected to see the beginnings of mycelium I see slightly yellowed vermiculite. I'll post some pictures

Hi Everybody! Here's a picture of one of my 12 jars which all have similar yellow stains in the substrate at approximately where they were inoculated. There is a mild tangy odor when the cap is unscrewed. The Mazatec spores inoculated on 02-21-02
