FUCK YES!

I just logged into paypal, since I had received a significant payment from a generous person...
I was expecting to see a $90 balance, since I recall having had sucked my bank account dry.
It turns out I had forgotten about an extra $35 that was also present. So, I have a total of $125 in my paypal balance. This struck me as awesome! So, I have enough money to put a large chunk of it into repaying debts and yet also enough to order myself up some lab equipment!
1 Support Stand 1 Alcohol Lamp 1 Replacement Wicks (pack of 3) 2 5mm Glass Tubing (pack of 6) 1 500 ml Erlenmeyer Flask 1 Rubber Stopper size: #6 - solid 1 Rubber Stopper size: #6 - 1 hole 1 Rubber Stopper size: #6 - 2 hole 1 Rubber Stopper size: #0 - solid 1 Rubber Stopper size: #0 - 1 hole 1 Rubber Stopper size: #1 - solid 1 4" Wire Gauze w/Ceramic Center 1 100 ml Florence Flasks 1 Rubber Stopper size: #2 - solid
That will really bolster my lab setup, methinks. I'll finally have a heat source, stoppers, a support stand... oh my I'm just brimming with enthusiasm!

If i knew more stuff to do with all my glassware, and knew how to do it right, I would still have it all set up, instead of in my closet. I put it away after my last failed mescaline extraction... I realized I needed to read more.
Oh, and are you going to use the alcohol lamp as your heatsource? i hope you don't plan on boiling anything...

Yeah, the alcohol lamp is an inexpensive burner.
I don't plan on it actually boiling anything, but I would like something with better heat output than an electric blanket
It's designed for use as a heat source. I beleive it wasn't uncommon in centuries past to use lamps such as that one in laboratory settings.

Because I have no idea how I would pipe pressurized gas to it.
Besides, I tend to work in either a corner of the bedroom or in a bathroom... those are not ideal places to have a pressurized, flammable gas AND an open flame
Eventually I'll just buy a decent hot plate. I've yet to come across an instance where I could have used a burner and it wouldn't have been preferrable to use a hotplate instead.

Just buy a tank of propane. Those tanks are designed not to explode.
But if you don't go with a bunsen burner you might want to consider a fondue burner. They have a clear blue flame and are adjustable. They can also get a lot hotter than that alcohol burner, bigger flame. http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=Fondue+Burner&btnG=Search

If I was going to get a decent burner, I would definitely go for a lab-grade burner. Perhaps not a bunsen, but one of the many varieties of lab burner.
I'm an overly proud man... I often insist on using things designed for a lab, even when other things would suffice.
However, I'd rather spend my money on a combination of hot plate and magnetic stirrer. Unfortunately those are expensive, so for the time being I shall burn denatured alcohol. The BTU output is less than ideal, and there will be some soot, but I don't mind.

That alcohol burner is designed for the lab? It looks more like a candle. So why not the fondue burner? More heat, almost no soot and also cheap. Whatever, it's your party.

Well, United Nuclear plays it off as being genuine lab equipment, it's probably just a bit of anachronistic lab technology from centuries past.. something below today's standards.
I admit it's chincy, but the low price won me over.
I'll get better some day, but I've just blown all the money I care to spend for a while. The fondue burner definitely looks like a nice option. Thanks for pointing that out.
Then again, I have a gas stove underneath an exhaust hood... that's a nice heat source. It's not ideal because it's a food-prep area, but with due caution it could be made to work.

the TA in my high-school chemistry class cooked himself some ramen inside of a beaker on top of a bunsen burner.
Come to think of it... he also toasted bread for a sandwich over the same burner. I think he may have made a grilled-cheese too.
He was a hungry motherfucker.

Yeah a gas stove should do fine. Just remember to clean up.
