Mushrooms turning black when dried
    #5583786 - 05/02/06 10:41 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

A few of the mushrooms picked lately have virmiculite on top, so i wash off the caps a little extra and have to rub the virm. off. Well.... when i go to dry it, the cap turns black. Im guessing its bruising like when you touch the stems but its just very concentrated to that area therefor the darker color...? Or is am i completely off? I havent actualy had experince with cap disocoloration because i havent ever washed the mushrooms befor (:() but now i am just incase.

washingthem can cause water to absorb into them, i dont think washing is a good idea, make sure u dry it ASAP

apart from that I am not sure

verm will not hurt you when ingested in small amounts, washing them does damage to your fruits. i usually seperate the dirty part of the fruit from the rest of it and then make sure to group removed parts while drying so that i can make tea out of it, since straining removes all solid substances.

Take a dry toothbrush and wipe them off. Washing freshies is not good. That's why the caps turned dark. GL.

Hmm, I've always washed my fruits without a problem. The only time its ever actually done anything noticable that I've seen was when I had just washed them, and placed them in the desiccant chamber. I went to walk out of the room, slipped and fell, dropping the chamber and the soaked mushrooms all over the floor. The mushrooms turned into goo from direct exposure to the damprid. No idea how many grams were ruined :frown:

Ever since I still wash, but instead of putting them right in the desiccant chamber I put them in front of a fan to dry completely. Lesson hard learned!

I think I'll use a toothbrush on my dried mushies. They are completely covered with spores.

I agree with wiggles. I've always washed my mushrooms with no problems. The only time I had a problem is when I put them in an oven still wet. They turned to black, nasty mush. If you aren't using a dehydrator, I would dab any wet spots with a papertowel before attempting to dry them.

You can also wait until the mushrooms are dry and just rub off the verm, peat, etc. It comes off easily wet the mushies are dry.

i just rub everything undesireable off. an old toothbrush works good for areas that are hard to reach when you don't want to break the piece off and just clean it.

never washed mushies before. i like to get the water out as fast as possible so i can weigh them.

I don't know a ton about the matter, but when I was back doing PF cakes and had my first flush I washed my fruits.

Picked em, and immediately ran to the sink with all the dreams of fun to come dancing in my head. Turned on the faucet, grabbed a handful of fungus, put them under the nozzle, and I watched as they absorbed water and turned into a pile of mush. Really put the mush in mushrooms. and YES they did rot and turn black afterwards.... even though they were fan dried and placed in a drying chamber.

I have never done such a stupid act concerning mycology since. Now, like thenewguy05, I use a toothbrush.

I now wonder if the fact that I washed my harvest (they did not turn black) might have sped up oxydization, which may have been why my fruits were so weak....

I've just had the same prob while drying them in the oven on low heat after washing in water.. Was sorta hoping to get dirt and grubs off as I wasn't able to carefully pick in he first place. Was planning to get it chopped up finely and set it into choc. Do you reckon they've lost all potency?
