perlite changing colors

my perlite is changing color in some spots from its normal white to a golden brown; its only changing color on the top layer, could it be "sun burnt" from my lighting or a could it be a contaminent.

sounds like a contaminant.use peroxide, and if it goes away youll know for sure...although perlite sunburning doesnt sound very likely to me.
