I cant find any oyster shell anywhere. All I have is "High Yield" brand hydrated lime, some blood meal, and garden gypsum. I plan on doing the 50/50 verm/peat. How much of each should I use/ if any?

Oyster shells are sold at any feed store. Anywhere birds are sold. I wouldnt recommend using hydrated lime...more preferrably calcium carbonate. Find it at PetSmart, reptile section.

Hydrated lime is what you want for a casing layer. It goes to work right away instead of needing time to break down. Use the lime at the rate of 5% of the amount of peat by volume. In other words, a cup of your hydrated lime for each 20 cups of peat. Add gypsum at a ten percent rate. Use 1/2 the amount of blood meal that you do lime. Mix all the dry ingredients except the verm together well, then bring to field capacity. Bring the verm to field capacity, then mix it in with the peat. Pasteurize and use. RR

you could use hydrated lime as Roger suggested. This brings up the initial ph. Oyster shells maintain your ph. they will never bring it past 7 or 8 I believe. Oyster shells are used for Chickens as a Ca suppliment, so go to any feed store and they will have it. I have also heard to this Ca enriched Sand used for reptiles.

My advice is to fuck that casing mixture off completely and go with a simple mixture of coco coir and verm.
