Piracy worse than child pornography
Society's new perspectives
By Nick Farrell: Wednesday 26 April 2006, 06:44 Click Here! THE NEW look Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA) seems to be giving the world an unusual moral code.
Details of the upgraded act, which has the blessing of the music and film industry and the Bush administration, are now coming to light. It appears that the DMCA will have a maximum sentence of ten years inside for the crime of software and music piracy. It will also give the FBI the powers to wiretap suspected pirates.
Although sentencing varies in the US, the new law does send a very strange message as to what the government considers 'bad' in the 21st century.
For example assaulting a police officer will get you five years, downloading child porn will get you seven years, assaulting without a weapon will get you ten years and aggravated assault six years.
So in other words if you copy a Disney CD and sell it you will be in the same league as a paedophile who is distributing pictures of sexual attacks on children.
If you copy Craig David's CD you get ten years, but if you punch him in the face and pummel him into a seven day coma you will only get six. You are more likely to get the respect of the prison population with your six year sentence as well.
More here.

What in Germany?? Here in Holland, downloading is legal.
Hmm I just checked it out and copying is 4y max and 45.000 euro fine. That's sick, but that's only for professional mass copiers. Downloading is still legal though.

4yrs is still pretty fucked up, IMO... especially when you consider child pornography has about the same sentence... these are the situations where you see who really has the power... it sure as heaven is not the people...

I am talking about the people who copy it to DVDs to sell it to people who don't know how to download, don't want to bother or don't have a computer.
Ingo, yeah it is pretty ridiculous that sentence. A big fine I can understand, but prison? Anyway in Holland there's no chance of being imprisoned with violent offenders etc for that kind of crime. I heard that in America you can end up between violent criminals even if you haven't commited a violent offence.

How much does child pornography cost?
How much does murder cost?
How much does software/music piracy cost?
There's your answer.
Laws stopped being about morals and started being about potential/lost profits as soon as this continent was settled.

Yeah ninjas suck. You'll just be sitting there, minding your own business, and they'll come marching in, and crawl up your leg, and start biting the inside of your ass, and you'll be all like, "Hey! Get out of my ass you stupid ninjas!"

This fuckin "intellectual property" makes me fuckin sick.
That artists usually dont even make any money from the album sales!!! Its the worms at the top (CEO's), that leech off the artists work, and make all the profits.
I say keep pirating. Dont stop. Support the artists you like by going to their shows and promoting their shit.
Dont ever listen to this bullshit that Pirating is "bad". Fuck that. and fuck Corporate America!

Piracy is an interesting topic.
After all, how can I steal something if nobody actually loses anything? If I steal your shovel ...well, you don't have a shovel anymore.
I look at it this way...
If I download Photoshop, I get to use Photoshop and Adobe gets nothing.
If I don't download photoshop, I don't get Photoshop and Adobe still gets nothing.
Either way, Adobe doesn't generate a dime. I say it's only piracy if one can reasonably prove that you would have bought a product if you couldn't have obtained it illegally.
Just my two cents.

Yes I also think of it that way. But then again I have bought less CDs since I started downloading and I've visited the cinema less frequently. I have bought quite a few DVDs though.
I think a good solution would be to have a subscription system. I would be willing to pay $20-$25 a month to be able to download everything I want in high quality. My downloads would be monitored and the money would be divided accordingly. If everyone had this I think the artists would still make enough money.
