They've been on 12/12 for four days now. We haven't given them water since we planted them. Our moisture sensor says we don't have to yet. The plants still look happy so I guess the sensor is right.

Maybe it's these fungi and bacteria. The people on the grow forum I visit really rave about it.
Here's some info on them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycorrhiza
excerpt
Quote:
A mycorrhiza (typically seen in the plural forms mycorrhizae or mycorrhizas, Greek for fungus roots) is the result of a symbiotic association between a fungus and a plant. This symbiosis takes place at the root level, where individual hyphae extending from the mycelium of a fungus colonize the roots of a host plant, either intracellularly or extracellularly.
This symbiotic association provides the fungus with a renewable source of food through access to fixed carbon (sugars) from the plant photosynthate. These are translocated to the root tissues from their source location (usually leaves), and then to the fungal partners. In return, the plant gains the use of the mycelium's tremendous surface area to absorb mineral nutrients from the soil. It is believed that the mycelia of mycorrhizal networks have better mineral absorption capabilities compared to plant roots. An example of this is the manner in which phosphate ions are tightly bound to iron oxides in many soils. Plant roots are generally incapable of accessing these phosphorus sources (which can be large and are termed sinks), yet mycorrhizal mycelia can access these forms of phosphorus. The mechanisms of increased absorption are both physical—mycorrhizal mycelia are much smaller in diameter than the smallest root hair and thus are able to explore a greater volume of soil and have a much larger surface area for absorption—and chemical—the cell membrane chemistry of fungi is different from that of plants. Mycorrhizae are especially beneficial for the plant partner in nutrient poor soils.
Furthermore, mycorrhizal plants are often more resistant to diseases, such as those caused by microbial soil-borne pathogens, and are also more resistant to the effects of drought, perhaps due to the improved water uptake capability of the fungal hyphae.

i thought that kind of symbiosis is plant specific (meaning there are certine types of fungus for certine types of plants...) or is it generally all mycorrhiza that's present in the soil that is helping the roots?
how did you come about this fungus and how did you apply it to your soil? (maybe you've written about that and i missed it so ) i also read that you plan on using the same soil to retain the "beneficial bacteria/fungie" in the soil... that might lead to different difficulties like salt build up and PH problames. you'd have to depend on fertelizers also and add compost for each cycle... i guess you've thought about that already so i'm wondering what exectly is you're doing and why?
either way, it's looking GREAT enjoy!

yah, the chaps at my grow shop have told me about the benefits from the mycorhizzae. Ill probably explore that avenue, but my next plan is to buy a simple DWC bubble bucket and fool around with hydro for a bit. Im getting real sick of the mess from a soil grow, plus i have gallons up gallons of used soil i need to get rid of.

We got the fungus from an online growshop. It's supposed to work with cannabis. When we planted the plants we put a gram of spore mix into the hole. The fungi should then spread themselves. With the fungi, bacteria and the plants the soil should retain it's quality. We use organic fertilizers and check the pH of the soil now and then. I don't see why we would need to add compost. The soil should have enough nutrients. We stop giving fertilizer before we harvest so the plants should suck up most of the remaining nutrients. The big advantage of not changing the soil is that we don't have to lug around huge amounts of dirt, which might also raise suspicion with the neighbors. And we don't disturb the ecosystem that's formed in the soil. We'll see how it goes.

We don't have a lot of mess, and if it works out we don't have to get rid of the soil. I don't see any big benifits to hydro and it sounds like a lot of hassle to me.

The difference between you and me is the style of soil grows. You use one big container, tub style, whereas i use a bunch of 2-3 gallon pots. The mess comes from transplanting plants, adding new soil, perlite. I also have a shit ton of different sized pots, huge bags of soil, etc. Since i dont resuse my soil i have to get rid of it.
I understand your feelings on the hydro, in the beginning i just wanted to go soil only for a few reasons, but now i want to explore the hydro route to see if will benefit me more then a soil grow. Only reason im seriously considering it is because i can get a nice setup for one plant for about 20-25 bucks.

why not mix in half new soil and half old soil?
We remove 1/5th of the soil, the top layer, and replace it with new soil every grow.
We just watered our plants using our drainage tube system for the first time. We hope to see a higher soil moisture on our moisture sensor in 3-12 hours.
