Steam Sterilizing help

Hey. I want to grow, but can't afford the pressure cooker yet so I think i need to steam sterilize. In order to do this all I do is take my jars and put them in a pot with water, with towels under the jars, and let boil in the pot with the pot's lid on tight for an hour and a half. With the water only halfway up the jars and lower the heat when the steam starts leaving the lid? how does the steam get into the jars to sterilize them? Thanks for any help

Outside steam does not enter the jars. Rather, the liquid in the jars becomes steam, thus sterilizing the inside of the jar.

right... which is why its also important to wrap the foil on top tightly, and let it cool very slowly in the pot with the lid still on, so all that steam evenly turns back to water throughout your jars, and none of it escapes.
thats why your "when steam starts leaving the lid" wording is a little troublesome... you should have foil wrapped tightly over each jar so steam DOESNT leave the jars, and so bubbling water or dripping condensation doesn't enter the jars. you started out with the perfect amount of moisture in the jars, and you don't want that to be altered in your sterilizing process.

I thought that your jars are NOT supposed to contain any water inside them? Isn't too much water bad? Isn't your grain supposed to be COMPLETELY dry before putting them in the jars? I'm doing the microwave/steam wbs method http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/1218013/fpart/6/vc/1

If you read his method, "I put 1 lb of millet into a bowl, poured boiling water over it. Let it soak for 24 hours. Then microwaved for 2 mins waited 2 mins, microwaved 2 mins until it had had 6 mins. Then drained it put it in jars and steamed for 1 hour"
How would there not be water in it? Water is absorbed into the grain. There should be no STANDING or EXCESS water. That does not mean there is no water.

I would assume he is doing PF tek with BRF and vermiculite if it's he is new to growing although I'm not sure he didn't say exactly. But if that's the case the BRF/verm mix would have a specific ratio of water to verm to BRF in the jar already that you wouldn't want to alter when steam sterilizing.

You need to pressure cook grains, not steam sterilize. They need to be sterilized under pressure. RR
