Who out there wants change?
    #557893 - 02/20/02 09:06 PM (22 years, 7 months ago)

You are young, happy, you have no worries, and are at the beginning of your lifes experiences. Then you grow to an age where you find out you are going to have to work for most of your life. Spending most of your time doing something you really don't want to do. Well maybe you find a job out there that you like and that pays good. But for most of us growing up has its difficulties. Your parents don't have that much money and don't have that good of paying jobs. You can start your own business, a trade perhaps, you could find a basic job and work 40 hour weeks, or you can go to college, while spending a fortune for tuition and shit, then end up working a 9-5 job. All of this work just so you can have a big house with a pool, and a nice car.

I don't want any of that. Im not materialistic at all. I want to experience life traveling around the world, without having to spend most of my life trying to pay for it. If i could sit down in a nice little piece of land in the mountains and live in a small little community that could self support itself i would. A simple life, it would be nice. No worries about the government trying to raid your field of marijuana. No worries, once again. I wouldn't even mind traveling by foot. Perhaps living a life like a sadhu in India. Spending your whole life on a spiritual journey. I don't know for sure. But something different. Or how about building me a nice little tree house in a beautiful rainforest. While i spend my life with nature. Who really know what this life is all about... so i want to spend my life as a wonderful adventure. Back to the basics. I hope to die old, happy, and with no worries. No staring into the mirror worrying about my image. Never worrying about breaking the laws of society. Living ever breath as it were your last.

Maybe i'm dreaming but one day I hope to be living the way that i want, and hopefully all you shroomerites out there will be doing the same.

Peace and love,
Droz

You just described my ideal life as well. I think there are a lot of people out there that feel the same way. Unfortunately, there aren't a whole lot of undeveloped tracts of land out there free from the influence of modern culture. Even if you bought the land and created a self-sufficient, back to nature community, I'm sure the government wouldn't let you get away with it without taxing all your transactions and shit.

I think the saddest thing is when someone has these ideals when they're young, but eventually realizes its too impossible so they give in and join society. Youthful ambition is not a vice, its a natural recoiling more and more people are feeling toward a culture that is growing increasingly materialistic and ego-driven. Its the 21st century, I think its about damn time to start making some constructuve changes. I sure as hell am not going to have a 9-5 job. Hopefully I'm going to play music and try to influence people and get them thinking in the right direction. If not I'll go live out in the woods and work on gaining wisdom and growing spiritually rather than collecting useless possessions. We are active creators of our society's future, we can either maintain the status quo whatever that may be or we can take it someplace we really want to go.

If i ever get my neo hippie comunity in the woods up and running i will invite both of you, i too don't want to have to deal with an unfree society. I would like to create my own little piece of the world free of politics, violence, other peoples rules and almost totaly independent. ahh what a novel idea

Well your idea was my idea I call it living like "kung fu" if you have seen the old TV show you will now what I am talking about.
I thought about community life and starting one but non of my friends were ready (they are caught up in the rat race) so I started my own "community", I moved to the woods with my wife a year ago, and was the best decision I could have made.
We are not self-sufficient yet, but we are working towards it.
We practice voluntary simplicity (we buy only what we consider a necessity).
We live a much fuller life that we did in the city, we have no stress, and we make more money now than before (go figured).
For all you young people that have this feeling that the career life is not for you, I recommend reading "Your money or your life"
And yes start saving now, and don?t use credit cards (credit cards = slavery)

Today I spent a good part of the day thinking about the same things you mentioned. I want to walk around the world by foot and connect with nature. I have put a lot of thought into it over the last few months. Your post is an articulated version of my thoughts.

People are thinking this way more and more.

yeah if i could win the lottery i'd buy me some land in some bayou somewhere have a little boat, old chevy, a couple of critters, enough money to buy a few necesities and have a few little things like satelite tv and just live off the land. Maybe have a few marijuana plants, have some shrooms growing, build a little still or whatever, find a wife and live a nice quiet little life.

it would be pretty cool to buy an island out in the pacific somewhere. no government control or anything... just start your own little society.

i refuse to work at some job i hate for the rest of my life just to buy a bunch of crap that i don't even really need. it would also be nice to buy a little farm somewhere and just live off of what you planted yourself.

ah, dreams...

I've been dwelling heavily on this subject for a couple of weeks before this post. You described what I've been thinking this whole time. I'd like to just escape from everything that's "important." I'm in college now, and I've always felt school was a waste of time.

It feels like I'm working my ass off, so that I can later...work my ass off. NO THANKS!! Sometimes I feel like I just wanna move to china and become to shaolin monk. And spend my life chasing ZEN instead of money and "happiness"

I dont think the government would tax a community at all. There would be nothing to tax as we would be completely self sufficient. Also if we purchased the land and paid our taxes we would be as good as invisible!

This society that we have grown up in definately sucks! The thing we have to do is not lose our dream, as idealistic as it may be. If you dont want a 9 to 5, dont do it! As simple as that. Even if you live within the confines of "society" you dont have to be as greedy and materialistic as the rest of them. If you want to travel, work for a while at a job that is somewhat enjoyable, then go off and see the world. I have a friend in England that does this, and she is extremely happy. Poor as all hell but happy. Redefine your world and pay no attention to the fucks that tell you otherwise! I try to watch and read the news as little as possible, because this negative bullshit that they put out does not pertain to me in the least. I know the basic laws, I dont need to keep up on all of the political bullshit. I also dont need to know how many children died form drowning or murder. (its sad, but its out of my control, and only serves to make me upset) We have the power to change the world; not for everyone, but definately for ourselves. I'll end this rant with a quote: "find yourself a back door" - incubus

This post is for all the people in this thread, trust me when I tell you it is possible, I have done it and I am no genius, nor did I have or made a lot of money.
Is just starting to pictured in your mind, don't say "if I win the lotto" or things like that, start a plan now and in a few years you will have it, is all done in small steps.
If you don't have any money now start learning the skills that you will need (gardening etc.) Money will come if your soul desires a change. It took me 30 years to understand this.
The only one stopping you is your self.
