Mental Health?

A few days ago (while we were tripping) I had a good friend tell me he was worried about me because he thought shrooms just completely exhaust your mind to the point where can't do anything, he said if I keep doing shrooms the way I'm doing them* I'd probably disintegrate psychologically. Now I know tripping isn't for everyone but what do you think are your chances of actually having a mental disorder from shrooms? (psychedelics in general)This is quite a serious question and appreciate any help I can get.

People cannot tell you what exactly what will happen to you, it depends on how long you take between your trips, what level of trips you most commonly take, how mentally stable you are, if you have a long history or any at all of mental illness in your family, etc.. Moderation is the key, if you have no history of mental illness and you think it is doing more good then harm then you should probably be okay. If I were you I'd probably cut down my trips to one solid trip a month, but you should still be alright. Not that I'm some kind of expert but most of the general population who haven't read anything on shrooms believe things like, they will make your brain bleed, do them too many times and you will be completely burned out or worse insane. Read up as much on it as you can if you're concerned.

they only make u crazy if u were predisposed to it. u can do them as much as you want and youd probably be ok, although a little spacey until you took a break perhaps. syd barret had previous mental problems, the acid just worsened the syptoms quicker. it didnt make him crazy out of nothing

take longer breaks between trips, tripping that often isnt good for your brain(causes chemical imbalances in your dome). plus it takes away from tripping being a vacation from reality...
if you ask me 20 times in a year is about 14 too many.
use your best judgment

...so your friend was tripping, and he came to the conclusion that you would probably "disintegrate psychologically" if you keep taking mushrooms? What does that mean?

Joining the ranks of syd barrett is not the worst thing in the world. You can bet your ass he is smart as hell but just a little bit weird at first glance.
If you trip too often, you can bet your ass you can develope what would be considered a mental illness, or you yourself might even consider it as that. I good but unstructured metaphore would be, try taking 15 hits of good lsd. I wouldnt recommend that to anyone, because it could be a very good, or very bad thing for them. SOme people become changed for life from frequent doses, or the high dose I mentioned with lsd. SOme seem to be able to catch the drug and behold it fully, some people fall behind and are negatively effected by the nature of psychedelics. SOme would say those people are not ready. I wouldnt say that because they simply had made a mistake along the way, and the outcome could have been right as rain.
Also the first and third option in your poll are basically the same thing in a way. Id say yes, you are getting into places within your mind that for some people could be recieved differently, and It could very easily change people for the worse. It can completely fuck people up. Unless you know what you are doing, you wouldnt ask such questions. The effects are obvious. If you were a person like syd Barrett, No you shouldnt shroom that often. He fucked his shit up. At the same time im sure he knows more about hallucinogens than 99% of the population of those who use those drugs around the world. Crazy and psychedelics kind of go hand in hand.

i would say you will be fine. as long as you can handle yourself with shrooms then youll be aright, and like habitat said, you should definetely limit your trips to once every month or more, it will keep your brain balanced(especially if your young because certain parts in your brain are still growing), and it will retain the magic of it. the more you trip, the more weaker the expericence will be. if u do that u ill begin to loose some of the special subtle feelings that you get on shrooms, then if u were do def space out your trips. and you want each and every expeirence to be vastly different from the others and you do that by spacing your trips out in months trip safe, trip smart, and space em out peace

Think of it this way, your brain is complex. but simply speaking the chemicals in the brain are a line. when you trip this line becomes wavy. so if you trip so often your at a constant "wave". once you start taking breaks the wave becomes a line more often, it goes back to normal. I have no idea what the fuck that means and why or how I came up with it..........anyways, its like smoking pot too much( if theres any such thing) for me anyways, if I smoke too much ill become less involved with stuff, it becomes more difficult talking to people, and harder to act like myself around people...Alright I dont realy have a point, I agree with what ever was said by who ever above. its wear and tear basically. those are the chances you take when shroomin, or with anydrug at that.

"When you spend most of your time on drugs, altered reality becomes the norm"
Not sure who said that... Maybe it was a friend, maybe it was in a dream, maybe it's just a product of getting lost in my thoughts while stonned, who knows, but it seems relative to this topic...

I personally have psychiatric problems. I asked my shrink if all the LSD I took when I was younger could have caused it and he didn't seem to think so. He said it could have triggered what I was already predisposed to though. I would guess I took LSD on at least 350 to 500 times from 1973 to 1985. I was taking lots of other drugs too. 20 times a year doesn't seem excessive to me.

Fuck that. Trippin fridays fool! Welcome to the club! I havnt had a binge that long, but I'd imagine it dpeneds on your time in your life. At the risk of minimalizing our current situations, it is, however, "just a phase"... milk it for all its worth, soon enough you wont want to do shrooms but a couple times a year, if at all. (although freuqncy like this is a good way to get burned out on shrooms, never wanna do them again. a GREAT way to "kill the magic" and just make them mushrooms...)

I really don't think you took shrooms too many times and I highly doubt doing it that much will have any negative or long-term effect on you. I went on a four month binge on acid, taking it up to three times in a week and never less than 3 hits. And nothing bad happened to me. I just see visuals & get slight auditory halluciantions at times (noises, or I might think I heard my name. Not full-on schizophrenic type stuff), aka perma trip. It's really just the bad trips that can mess you up--so always plan your trips out and be in a good set and state of mind, and NEVER resist the effects of the drugs and you're pretty much guaranteed a good trip. Good trips will expand your mind, not disinegrate it. The only real side-effect of heavy shroom/acid use is perma-trip, but that goes away eventually...and it's fun . So don't worry about it, just don't keep doing shrooms that much...maybe then your perma trip might not go away (of course it's all in your mind. i believe that anything that happens, like triggering of a mental illness etc. off a psychedelic drug is reversible through use of that drug. if it can cause it it can get rid of it.).

20 times a year is not too much... twice a month max sounds like moderation enough
so my answer is "no" ...but there is a slim chance that someone could go nuts from that level of use if they were susceptible to mental problems already, i guess...

Taking shrooms 20 times a year won't make you "psychologically disintegrate", it may change you a little bit but you won't go brain dead or anything.

If you are doing mushrooms frequently without having a strong foundation of belief in your use, I imagine it would be unsettling.
Mentally degrading? Not likely, unless you have underlying conditions.

Yes, I would say you can be the only judge...
Basing your usage on the context of your families history with mental illness is the best indicator, but like most things inheriting any specific trait is no guarantee...
I lost a close friend to Schizophrenia who I basically watched disintegrate in front of me on a DXM trip... it was the most fucked up thing I have ever seen. He dropped out of school, became isolated and eventually took his own life right as everyone else was just starting theirs...
He had done acid, shrooms, etc well before our trip so I feel no guilt there; but the fucked up thing was talking to his parents after he went off the deep end... his Dad said whenever he smoked pot in college he would hear voices and have indiscriminate uncontrollable urges... so, to say the least my good friend was inherently predisposed to those types of mental functions... nobody knew though... not even him...
Keep yourself in check, and tell your friend to relax... IMO, I'd rather take a heroic dose than get hammered to the point of blacking out on alcohol any weekend... guess which one is worse for your brain and statistically worse for your general health and for putting you at risk for extraneous injury (OWI, Violence, etc) due to the context of your ingested materials?
Then again, 20 times does sound like more than my average... I agree with one strong trip a month, at most is best... if you do small amounts too frequently it washes out...

There's really no way to tell for sure. Family history of mental illness is a good reason not to trip a lot, but on the other hand there are people with family history who have tripped plenty of times and not had a problem (me included)
