Aquarium heater Q?
    #557752 - 02/20/02 06:36 PM (22 years, 3 months ago)

the jar that the heater is in does'nt need to be sealed does it?
also, Will tap water with h2o2 be fine for the water inside? or does filling it with perlite and keeping the perlite nice and moist work better (with the heater in it)

it's only a 50w heater

I just noticed there is a half inch crack in the glass, should this be a big worry?

Just use water and h2o2.

No, the jar does not need to be closed.

If the crack lets water in, dont use it, it could do some damage...heh

Is there any chance of fire using a 50 watt aquarium heater in a jar of h202/water, inside a rubbermaid container?

QUESTION: "Is there any chance of fire using a 50 watt aquarium heater in a jar of h202/water, inside a rubbermaid container?"
No there isnt, its very common to see people use the aquarium heater in a jar of water in a rubbermaid. The only thing is, and what I have discovered is that you might want to put some folded tinfoil underneath the jar. Other than that your good to go.

The question about weather or not you need it covered is up to you. If you cover the top of the jar with tinfoil (most common) then you will get the heat that you want without the evaporated moisture from the water inside the jar. If you leave the jar uncovered, you will get extra moisture, and in my case I have 2 jars, this moisture is enough to go up to 90-100% in my 35gallon rubbermaid, and so the heater acts as a humidifier as well, "hitting two birds with one stone".....let me know more as you go on....

Just take my clothes and leave
