spawn bag ?
    #5577257 - 05/01/06 12:58 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

when you all do spawn bags, do you let them cool down completely in the PC before you open and impulse seal?

I ask because i thought you were supposed to let the cooker cool down to 0 then open and quickly seal, but i cant get the bags to seal well while they are hot. They either don't seal all the way, or the sealer melts the bags. I have tried and tried, but cant find a happy medium.

I can get the bags to seal really well when i seal them before they have been cooked, I did this to get the settings right, but when trhey are hot it throws everything off.

Do i have to worry about con tams getting in the PC if i let it and the bags cool for a couple hours after i PC or is they're another solution?

thank you

For me once the PC pressures goes down and then when it's cool enough to touch I quickly seal them, I have no problems with my sealer,

Reason being is so I can mix the bag (moister content) and then let cool.

You can leave it in the PC until it cools with no fear of contams, though I dont think that is as good as sealing them while hot and mixing.

I have not tried to seal them before PCing, though some of the bags can be, so I dont know about that.

What kind of sealer are you using and how,

i have the 12 sealer from myco supply along with they're bags. what i meant by sealing before is i did some test runs to find out what setting to use when i first got it and i get the bags to seal really good, but after i pc'ed the firsty time and sealed them when the pressure cooker got to 0 it melted them, so i turned it down a little and it didnt seal well so i turned it up a hair and it melted them, etc etc etc. so i was making sure i could let them bags cool down so they would be like when i first tried it with cool bags and got a perfect seal.

Weird that I know not, but how about this.

Seal the bag hot at the top, set the sealer to lets say 5,

Push down slowly and firmly but dont push hard,

Then let the sealer go off, wait a few moments and then slowly lift the handle and slowly remove the bag if it sticks.

If this dose not work try again lower on the bag and with a higher or lower heat setting on the sealer.

I think it just might be your technique and not the bags/sealer.

Just a thought,

You can seal either once the bags have cooled a little bit or once they are totally cool. I have not tried the bags you seal before they go in the cooker, but I doubt they work well. Even if the plastic can handle the cool down, the bags will balloon up when they cooling which is likely to pop them if you have them packed. Typically I wait at least an hour before I try to seal. The key points to sealing are these:

1) Unless you have a flowhood or glove box, seal without allowing air in the bag if you can. That usually means you bring the sealer to the bag and lift the flaps up to the sealer, not the other way around. Most likely if you try to pick up the bag and bring it to the sealer, you wil allow air in. That is why you carefully plan the position of the bags and flaps BEFORE you cook, so you can seal them without moving them. You hang them up to allow the air to be drawn in as they cool.

2) When you press down with the impulse sealer, press down firmly to hard on setting 5 to 8. DO NOT LET UP ON THE SEAL BAR FOR AT LEAST 5 TO 8 SECONDS! This is key to using these. Yes I know it's called an impulse sealer, but the plastic has to cool down before you let up or else the seal will be poor.

3) Check for tiny imperfections in the seal that may lead to a pinhole leak. Pinhole leaks lead to contamination when you mix the bag, so if you even suspect one a little, do another seal.
