Saw my coworker lose most of his fingers

Well last night was pretty tragic. I work in a mill, and an old one at that, with tons of moving machinery. Accidents do happen. My press operator was helping unjam the autopiler and his hand got pinched in between the wood and the chain....which by the way, does not stop. He's lucky he didn't lose an arm. Obviously his reflexes caused him to try and rip his hand back.
I know for sure at least 2 fingers are severed. I had to pick one up and get it on ice. I then looked for the glove(this is all while people were tending to him) and had to look and see if there were more fingers in it. No fingers, but a bunch of gooey shit in the tips of the fingers(muscle & skin). I think all are pretty inreparable. Not only were they crushed, but ripped off. They MIGHT be able to salvage a finger by doing skin grafts, but we'll have to see.
Pretty sickening. You know what it was like having to get that finger on ice and then look through the glove? Not pleasant that's for sure. Accidents happen daily in a workplace like mine....and I'm really starting to think I need a new profession. What if those were my fingers? I feel pretty bad for Tim. Let's hope he recovers soon.

Best of luck to your coworker/friend man, that is fucking terrible. It might not be a bad idea looking for a new line of work, because like you said, what if those were your fingers...

OMG that's fucked up just to imagine. Hope they can put them back on. I never work in crazy environments like that for this very reason.

An old school mate I used to go to boarding school with got his finger slammed between a rapidly closing steel door. It tore off one of his fingertips. Luckily I wasn't there when it happened, and fortunatly he got it sewed back on somehow. But just the thought of it is *shrug* very displeasing. Much luck to your co-worker, that's awful.

It's a market place economy, and a market place world.
Employees are disposable like the products which are created. I wonder if the owner of the factory lost any sleep over the accident. There are a few advatages though, workmens comp and medication, hopefully lots of it. Tell your buddy he owes you some for picking up his fingers.

Sorry to hear about your work associate. I used to operate a panel cutting machine, in a furniture factory, so I know all too well the dangers inherent in such work. I hope he gets better soon.

I dunno about where you live and your laws and shit, but here in Canada you have the right to refuse any unsafe work. The machine was still running and he put his hand in? Problem #1 right there.

that happened to my woodshop teacher. he lost a finger while using a saw. he wrapped up his finger, stuck it in his pocket, and walked down to the office. it was bleeding so bad, that he had to run, and he pulled his hand out of his pocket. as he was running, blood was forming a line down the hall on the floor. it was sick

Thanks for the words people I had to take off right when I posted. I'm going to be around a lot in the next 2 weeks though.
Yeah, I've never been in a situation like that before. I mean, first thing I did when I got home, being a northern BC'er and all , I had a drink....several actually. But even today, I still can't get those images out of my head. I mean, I'll be fine...but fuck man, that shit really hits home.
I'm just kinda shocked at the whole response time. It was way too slow. Still, I have to give credit to the greenhorn first aid guys....they have never dealt with something like that yet. But still, me, a STONED, NON-first aid guy, having to take the initiative to get the finger on ice and search for more remains in the torn up glove = not cool. I went to work soo baked...and it all burnt pretty deep in my memory.
I plan to hopefully go see him tommorrow and see what the scoop is. I mean, I'm not extremely tight with this guy, but I did have a few drinks with him....plus I work in very close quarters with him daily...I think that warrants a visit to the hospital.
To buddy who posted about refusing to do an unsafe act:
Totally correct. Remember though, out of all the mills I've worked in, this is by FAR probably the oldest Canfor mill. Very old machinery, lots of hands on labour. The auto piler, which is where the accident occured, is something that is always on the go. It works off the dry chain. They(the company) DO treat you only as a profit or loss and they pound it in your head that it's all about production, production, production. For sure, not much sleep will be lost over it, besides the thought of losing money. I've unjammed this machine plenty of times....and in almost all situations, the chain stays on. Only for the serious jam-ups do you turn it off. But to be very honest, your probably right. He actually did two things wrong. One, he COULD/SHOULD of shut the chain off and two, he was using the hammer in an unsafe way(according to WCB), by jamming at it with the handle(which then got caught in the lug and lead to the serious injury).
We weren't allowed to touch the "crime scene" because it automatically goes into investigation. But I went against what the supervisor said because I thought there might be fingers to save. I lifted up the lift and checked all around and in the chain for fingers. I do feel I did the right thing. Fuck, if they were my fingers, I'd want someone to do all they could to save them.
So what it comes down to....buddy for sure crushed almost every bone in his hand and possibly his wrist. He gauranteed lost at least 2 fingers and seriously damaged the others. We are a non-union mill, that gets jerked around often. After the investigation, it will be decided that he was doing an "unsafe act" which resulted in the injury........and he's going to get fucked over hard on the settlement.
It's really sad to see this happen to a close co worker. And obviously I'm drunk and can't shut up about it. But I really hope you all don't mind listening because it's good for me to get it off my chest.
