Casing and soil.
    #5576293 - 05/01/06 03:34 AM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Alright so just a quick question from me. lol. I had two left over cakes that were not colonizing anymore so i took them out and make a casing. I didn't use any thing special except for Miricle grow Organic potting mix with wet vermiculite on the bottom. I of course wetted the top of the soil and broke up my two cakes and put them under the soil. Its been almost 4 days now and the casing, which is about the size of a tyvek postal envelope is about 75% colonized. I also grow marijuana so i had the extra soil lying around. My question is what is the benefits to using the other methods found here on the shroomery. I know that i have not tried any other methods of casing but what i am seeing with this simple soil and verm so far is no different than the other methods. Thanks in advance for any comments anyone has.

Being that it's your first casing I would advise using just vermiculite. That potting soil will be really prone to contaminate. And a casing layer is supposed to be non-nutritious providing a good moist flat microclimate for shrooms to grow. I would suggest reading Hyphae's pinning strategy or look at the casing faqs. GL.
