Noob Question
    #5575631 - 04/30/06 10:23 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

This may seem stupid, but I looked everywhere, and I couldn't find the answer.

Why is it so easy to contaminate cultivated mushrooms, but in the wild, the spores are merely blown around in the wind, land on something and grow.

Thanks

Because in nature, it is a balance where every organism has its nitch to fit into.

In cultivation, we sterilize our material, which makes it a great medium for whatever lands on it. If our mushroom mycelium gets to the food first and colonizes it, all is good. However, if contaminants get to the sterilized material before our mycelium does, they in turn grow very well.

Partly for the same reason why a peace of bread left outside does not mold, but dries up. The UV rays from the sun kills the mold.
