Do you know the story of how he got his name?
His gross, fat uncle that lived with him and his parents (yes he was like 18 when he was coming out with albums) used to untactfully try to get with Beefhearts girlfriend and would often create scenarios where he was urinating or something and always mumble "Looks like a nice fine beefheart".
Yes, Safe as Milk is probably one of his best albums.

Well, I'm trying real hard to like him man, but I can't get past "Safe as milk" tho. Like that one but Trout mask is too much, I have to be ver stoned to enjoy it
I find Zappa easier to get into really, even tho I like Beefheart ideologically.

come on! the first song alone is so bad ass, and then Electricity!
If you have the capability, listen to it on a very wide spread out stereo system and listen to the genius of the mixing with what they had to work with back then. It is very interesting.

Have you listened to Ice Cream For Crow or Lick My Decals Off Baby? If not, give them a shot too. They aren't quite as insane as Trout Mask. Not to me anyway.

I'll have to took into those other albums. I sorta dig TMR, but if he's got some albums which are a little more approachable I can probably get into them, too. I got a copy of TMR from a friend when he found I was way into Zappa. "You've gotta here this guy, J -- he's nuts!" hahaha.....

Na Zappa came up with the name. Zappa wrote a scirpt called "Captain Beefheart vs the Grunt People" and Don Van Vliet originaly read the part...and he retained the name. http://www.beefheart.com/zigzag/gruntpeople/index.html
Thats a great website by the way...hours of reading.

Trout Mask Replica is definitely a unique album. Twisted lyrics, discordant music. An acquired taste.
His most accessible album in my opinion is Clear Spot. There is one quite beautiful cut on it -- My Head is My Only House (Unless it Rains). Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles isn't bad either.
Beefheart also does the lyrics on the only cut with vocals (Willie the Pimp) on Zappa's fabulous Hot Rats album. Hot Rats is almost forty years old now and I still enjoy listening to it.
