I found a gourmet mushroom today that weighs a damn ton!
Do you think it may have absorbed toxic heavy metals such as Cadmium, Nickel or Lead???

It is always possible that a mushroom has absorbed heavy metals from the soil. The term heavy metals typically refers to those elements in the periodic table that have atomic weights heavier than copper. Medically, we usually refer to most metals with biological function as heavy metals and these include the three you mentioned and many others. In any case, the 'heaviness' is based on atomic weight, not their accumulated weight in nature. So your heavy mushroom is not heavy because of metal sequesteration. More likely, a mushroom would be heavy because of excessive water absorption, or maybe it is just a super dense, fleshy shroom.
I guess that a heavier mushroom may have absorbed more water, and other elements and compounds, from the soil than a similar but lighter mushroom. Your biggest risk from heavy metals are if the mushrooms grew in soil close to a busy road, or in a current or old industrial site. And generally you would need to accumulated heavy metals over time from many meals to get a toxic effect - a single meal probably won't hurt you.

You may be interested in this hypothesis testing "Several samples of wild fungi showed the ability to accumulate some relatively high concentrations of certain elements, especially cadmium, copper, arsenic, mercury, zinc and lead. This is consistent with earlier studies which show that certain fungi can accumulate very high concentrations of metals"

It's very possible. On a show I saw recently. People near the Cherynobl area never ever collect mushrooms because fungi tend to concentrate toxic/radio metals(in this case, uranium/radium/plutonium) in their fruit bodies, aka mushrooms.

My mates parents are from switerland and he said they dont pick mushrooms anymore because of the Cherynobl disaster.
Is this normal? I mean thats what they do, but he seems to think you shouldnt pick any at all, I got the impression it was an unwritten rule over there (from his description - I wouldnt have a clue).
Perhaps it rained just before you picked them or something?
