The problem with hunting these days is so many of the areas are being raped clean. I searched for hours on end through woodchips with no luck so decided to head home but on my way back luck found two of my friends hidden amongst the grass.
They're bloody potent alright

It's still early season, but here's a North Shore find: from native bush on a local golf course. You got to pick these when it's raining to avoid strange looks from the golfers. Then again, some people will play golf no matter what the weather, the nutters! Then again, there I am scouraging through muddy bush in search of little brown fungus so I guess we're all insane...They're definitely P.Subaeruginosa.

Growing success! P.Subaeruginosa
Last Winter I dug up some mycelium from a large local patch in Auckland (only needed a litre worth). I incubated it with some hardwood (Macrocarpa) wood chips in a plastic container with holes in the lid. After a few months, the mycelium was clearly spreading to the new wood. Two months back I tipped the container into the garden, and viola! I've only harvested half a dozen from the patch so far, but 1. It's early in the season, and 2. The patch is only 1/2 x 1/2 a foot, and 2cm deep.
1. Early stages
 2. Growing nicely
 3. The patch

I've been hunting round in the bush all over Auckland every season, hoping to find a new, unfrequented spot. Anyway...the other day I got bored and decided to venture into the native bush behind my home. After 30 mins of eye-straining I spotted a couple of glistening brown caps with a semi-wavy shape. I thought "Nah, it wouldn't be". But it was! I sat in the one spot and found another dozen, hopefully not the last of 'em. They were P.Subaeruginosa, the only kind of shrooms I've had the fortune of meeting. So the lesson is, check your own backyard first!
NOTE: when hunting randomly, look for large fern trees. From observing their habitat in the few spots bush spots that I know of, the shrooms love growing on fallen tree debris and ferns are always rotting and falling. There's usually also deciduous trees around (with white hardwood). Some say they grow in Pine forests too, but I've NEVER encountered Subs in that environment. Can anyone explain where the Pine theory comes from?

I think in Australia they do find them in pine forests. It just doesnt seem to be the way it works here.

yep that we do. in SA, the most abundant sub fruitings are usually found in pine forest areas.

My theory is Pine forests are the most popular and are always getting raped clean. I tend to find them on the grass right beside the pine needles never seen one growing directly on the pine needles.

The p.aucklandiis grow in pine forests.....a few years back i use to pick heaps from riverhead auckland....i have heard that this spot has mostly been chopped down now (as the trees have been harvested) and worst the cops are pretty active around there. So its no theroy but only in Auckland....the weird thing is why are they only in auckland

Wot is the punishment in New Zealand for getting caught with a bag of magical mushrooms?

If you ever get caught by the cops run like hell and throw your bag away. If they find they bag say you've never seen it before.
Mushrooms are class A - you would get diversion for sure the first time, but I dont think they are too harsh on them, but still do convict.
There is a bit of ambiguity about the mushrooms status in the law. If you did your homework you could possibly get off. Another thing is to wait till your hearing and say that the mushrooms were not magic but something else. You have the right for them to have the mushrooms tested - and by that stage they'd probably be a rotten pile of goo, as I doubt they'd store them correctly.

In 3 years of hunting, I have NEVER encountered any cops. Just don't go hunting there during the week, and don't go in massive groups. There are still plenty of spots there, as they replant and still plenty of older forest areas. In a few years, the newer replantations will be tall enough to walk through, and once again, there'll be far more spots. I think the law here is that fresh mushrooms aren't illegal - they only become illegal when you prepare them (dry them out). They'll actually charge you with trespassing, rather than possession of a Class A drug, as it's a forestry area. I've also heard of gangs gathering there, but I've never seen that either. I've even heard of there being cameras there. Seems to all just be myths and folklore spread by people.

I do know some people who got busted in Chch. The cops here are pretty onto the major spots. These are public areas too - they even sprayed some of them.

I was hunting in that area between 95-97 and once came out of the bush to see a cop car parked near my car and other hunters cars...lucky it was empty and we pilled in and drove off. I think they where in the bush trying to bust us in the acted because it is a crime to have the mushrooms in your hand! But my brother got pulled over once on the way back from that area and they searched the car and the passengers and found mushrooms on one of the guys.....luckly they only confiscated the mushrooms and warned them not to come back there. Also I once arrived early on a week day to find a few gang members getting ready to go in but they minded there own business. Just dont go flashing your bag full of shrooms around them. But cameras in the forest is diffantly BS. Note: this was a popular road to go to and there are plenty of other entries into this forest that wouldnt be watched so much. but be carefull!!
Glad to hear its regenrating...i loved that place!!!
