For example, there is the Sitar, but it's not reasonable to get. To get one that is playable is like $800+.
What else is out there? What random stuff do you guys play.

kazoo? mandolin? harmonica? tabla? theramin?
you can always make your own. I had a buddy once that used to take Flurbies (or whatever those toys were called) and modify some part of the electronics, convert it to having a quater inch output (guitar cable) and running it through pedals to make the most wicked sounds.

I assume you mean like guitars and basses and whatnot.
Any kind of instrument associated with classical or jazz is totally out of the question on a budget.
You can get a decent banjo for a couple hundred bucks. They are a lot of fun to play and you don't have to redneck jug band type stuff if you don't want to.
Harmonica's are reasonably cheap. The only problem is that if you ever get serious you have to buy one in every key you're going to be playing in. Besides the money factor, its pretty much impossible to switch quickly between keys, so you'll have to play the standard, stereotypical blues chord progressions.

Is there anything out there that can get that wicked drone sound of the sitar? That's why I like it but I'm not under the delusion that I'm going to learn the sitar, or sell all my belongings to afford one.

Get a didgeridoo. Those things are sweet and absolutely wicked while tripping.

yes, yes the ukuleles are tuned abit different than buckets....
well from what ive heard from the hawaiian ukulele player in Oahu, a ukulele are the exact same as the bottom four strings of a guitar, jsut that instead the open chords of the ukulele are the fifth fret chords of a guitar. so if you hold down all four bottom strings of a guitar at the 5th fret, its the exact same tuning.
