Alder mulch
    #5571922 - 04/29/06 09:07 PM (17 years, 8 months ago)

Whats the best way to get cyanescens growing on this stuff? Start with a spawn bag of sawdust? I believe Stamets advises start mycelium on cardboard and then transplant. Secondly, where can one find Alder mulch in the PNW these days? Every where appears to be selling redwood mulch/dust/chips rather than alder wood mulch because alder mulch isn't used because mushrooms sprout up all over in this stuff without any help. Appears has totally been abandoned and several landscaping sites highly recommend against using alder mulch. Only place I can find it is very expensive and selling it for burning in a grill similar to cedar in order to smoke meat. If I purchase some small 1 gallon rhododendrons and throw some spawned chips under them will they be ready by fall? Will 1 gallon bucket Rhodies provide sufficient cover or will I need to head to a nursery to pick up some larger plants.

what i do with my woodlovers is inoculate a jar of grain from multi spore or LC and then spawn the grain to woodchips in jars or a large autoclavable bag.  then i use the colonized woodchips to spawn my bed.
as for the adler woodchips, get them if you can but i wouldnt fret over it. they are the best but mostly anything will suffice.  conifers may need to be aged so they the resins can break down.
if the rhododendrons provide shade then they should be enough.  you could always just throw a piece of cardboard over your woodchips until fall if need be.

good luck
