What poo do you use? newbie casing questions...

So, i've got some golden teachers colonizing PFTEK style and I'm wanting to case them in , preferably, poo once that day comes. I've heard of using horse dung, but how about cow? i know i've *heard* of mushrooms growing on cow manure , though i've never actually seen it in years of looking...(heard something about a chemical that farmers put in feed to prohibit certain spores' growth in their livestock's manure.) So, anyway, i have much easier access to cow manure but i suppose i could procure some horse dung if cow is no good. Also, before i considered casing i was planning on keeping my fruiting chamber humidity up by putting the cakes on top of a layer of wet perlite. What is the best & simplest way of keeping the humidity up for a cased fruiting chamber? Perhaps something simple along the lines of having it on top of wet perlite? nothing MacGuyver-y or expensive please since funds are limited. thanks for your help! oh, and i'm not set yet on what i'm using as a fruiting chamber, that sort of depends on what humidification method i end up implementing. peace, TM

If it's really way easier for you to get cow, then it's fine to use, but you should really add some shredded straw and/or vermiculite to it. That'll help bulk it up a bit, as well as give it a texture more conducive to mycelial growth.
If you add a minuscule amount of kelpmeal or soak the shredded straw in bloodmeal water, that can help to boost potency. Also, it never hurts to add an ounce or two of vegetable oil to every 5 lbs of substrate as a beneficial additive.
Or you could really just get aged horse poo and do all the stuff listed anyways, and have an even more kickass substrate

nice tips on adding beefiness to the substrate TRB. Skeletor, with using the perlite to get the right humidity, how would i place the cased mycelial cake on the perlite, just directly on top of it or by some other arrangement? also, whats the best way to pasteurize the poo without making my house smell of feces? thanks to all TM *happy beltaine*

i just have cases on top of the perlite. some sticks when you pick it up but whatever. helps drop the RH a bit too since you want 80-85% for casings. i fan more too then when i did cakes to keep the RH down. plus more FAE is a bonus.
check out the poo teks on the site under 'growing'. your house won't smell by the way. shouldbe aged poo. it smells earthy. if you only can get fresh poo then you have to leech it. untill it no longer smells like poo.
earthy good / pooey bad
