This train of thought really, really, really bothers me. Of course we are responsible! And the attitude that we can do nothing about it, and it's irreversible is a ridiculous notion that millions of people somehow have. And of course with that thought in your head, you will never do anything about it, and it will of course be irreversible because you refuse to accept that you have anything to do with it in the first place so why would you change?
You sound really compasionate but that doesn't make you right. How can you know that we are responsible? Climate changes have always occured and will always occur. They have caused huge extinctions in the past and will do so in the future. In the past there have been climate shifts of multiple degrees centigrade in just a few years. And what can we do about it? IF this is caused by man, it has been going on for a long time before we saw the first effects. So we might be too far. It's not like America will consume a drop less of oil in the near future. Nor will China, they are finally starting to develop. Well actually China uses not so much oil as it does coal.
Quote:
What it all comes down to, is that people on the whole, are lazy and stupid, and it will probably take major global catastrophes and billions of deaths before we wise up and realize that we DO effect our environment, and we are royally raping it. So it's only a matter of time before it rapes us. And it's already begun, small time. You think the disasters the Earth has been having lately have been bad.. you haven't seen anything yet.
No the disasters as of recent haven't been particularly bad (excluding hurricanes and floods which haven't caused a lot of deaths). Yes there have been a lot of deaths, but that's mostly because the danger areas are a lot more populated.
Quote:
Natural disasters are the Earth's way of "cleansing" itself and keeping balance. We see these Tsunamis and Earthquakes and Hurricanes and Volcanos and think oh no people died. I think, good.. some people died... And I can only imaging the disasters getting much more extreme, and much worse in the coming months and years, the way things are going. Chances are, they will get A LOT worse, before they get better.
This is silly gaia dribble. Natural disasters just happen. The Tsunami and earthquakes have nothing to do with climate change. Climate change affects the atmosphere not the deep earth processes. So you are glad when people die of disasters? You like it when poor underdeveloped people are slain in 100.000s. These poor people haven't even contributed a lot to CO2 emissions, yet they usually bear the full brunt of natural disasters. You in your civilized country probably pump out 10x as much of CO2 as the average tsunami or earthquake casualty. I think you are a nasty hypocrite if you like seeing 3rd world people die, so you can feel better about your gaia.
Quote:
In the meantime, keep mass producing and consuming.. keep mindlessly stripping the Earth's resources.. don't worry about global warming or pollution because Hey! It has nothing to do with us! We'll keep mindlessly driving our cars by the tens of millions with internal combustion engines continuously spewing toxic combusted fossil fuels into the atmosphere until we all choke to death of carbon monoxide poisoning or have our skin melted off by deadly deep space radiation due to the lack of ozone. Sounds like fun to me. And this of course is a perfectly natural thing.
Radioactive babies and three eyed fish in a medicated nation devoid of logic.
The previous statements are half fact, half my opinion. You decide what is what. And I'm half crazy.
What have you done to save the precious earth? Do you drive a car? Do you have central heating and AC? Do you live in a house that is bigger than your bare need? Do you eat more than you actually require? Do you use a computer and other energy inefficient devices?

DoctorJ, you posting this video gives me a new found respect for your views. thank you for posting this video. (even though the person who did the flash was a little bad style-wise - but that's just a pet peeve i have.)
to everyone else, even if you do not believe in global warming or oppose it what is wrong with taking a simple effort in helping the environment. recycling, carpooling, using alternative fuels, etc. there is no doubt pollution in this world. why not take responsibility for your actions and try to give back something good to this world. not just waste.

I'm all for clean green or nuclear energy. It's the way to go especially because fossil fuel will run out in the next couple of hundred years. Eventually green energy will become cheaper than oil. And cheap energy is good especially when it's green. I'm just not sure that this whole climate change is A: caused by man, and B: the end of the world. It could very well be, I'm just not convinced yet.

Consumers can do little to stop CO2 release. It's mostly industry which pumps out the CO2. But yeah, buying a effecient car, efficient appliances (lights, fridge, AC which you actually shouldn't have) does help.
I live in Europe and our carbon footprint is already half that of the avarage American.

maybe you could post you question a bit more clearly than a lolly and a question mark. Anyway I guess you're asking about the definition of carbon footprint
Quote:
Carbon footprint is a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide or CO2 emitted through the combustion of fossil fuels; in the case of an organization, business or enterprise, as part of their everyday operations; in the case of an individual or household, as part of their daily lives; or a product or commodity in reaching market.
A carbon footprint is often expressed as tons of carbon dioxide or tons of carbon emitted, usually on a yearly basis. There are many versions of calculators available for carbon footprinting.
CO2 emission per capita per year per country

Nice clip, I dig it, but this planet will only change its habits when it hurts. And by the time global warming pain is felt it'll be way too late.
Hell, I'm convinced that all species throughout the universe have one thing in common; the inability to become space-faring before the desire to destroy itself kicks in.
The dinosaurs died because they didn't have a space program.
With the way we're chewing through oil and the irresponsible saber-rattling this administration engages in ...do you really think we'll be able to explore space before some nutjob lets fly a 20 megaton nuke, instigating a full exchange?
I'm not optimistic.

We have a chance. never give up hope.
nuclear power is a dangerous toy, and I am very impressed with the world for not blowing itself up, considering we've been playing with it for awhile now. Every day I pray that this power does not fall into the wrong hands. But what is now our greatest fear will soon become our greatest ally in the struggle to seed the universe with life.
If we didn't need it, we wouldn't have it. Always remember that.
And, hey, cheer up!
