White fuzz on caps

hey all, I just took some caps out from under the jars where I was taking prints. They are KSS grown on hpoo, cased with verm, coir and crushed oyster shell. They were under the jars for about 48 hours, as normal for me. Half of them have whit fuzz all over the top of the cap. Is this mold or something? I hope not, then the prints are obviously contaminated.

I know it's probably mold, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Personally, I print for no longer than twelve hours, and I use a sheet of tyvek over the printing caps so they can breathe. A jar will cause stagnant air and bacteria buildup. RR

I put the jars upside down on a clean Lysol treated towel. I thought that would allow air exchange. I have made probably 50 prints this way and never had a problem til now. But this is the first time I've made prints with KSS. Could they be more susceptible?

Also, during fruiting there are obviously going to be mold spores, bacteria etc. present. And these are going to invade the air space of the fruiting chamber during fanning. My question is how can sterility of prints be guaranteed even if there are no noticible signs of any growth? The caps will be covered with contaminants during printing. Is it better to not fan manually? but rather make filtered air exchange holes?
Well, for anyone who's interested, I will give one of the mentioned KSS prints. You'd probably want to isolate it on Agar first.

First, try not to mist at all the day you pick for printing. You want the caps nice and dry so they won't mold or harbor bacteria during printing. It doesn't matter if a few trich spores are on the mushroom cap because it's going to puke out a billion or so spores, and chances are, any spores that have landed on it will stay there. If you're worried, you can always lay the cap on a piece of hardware cloth and let the spores fall through that to your printing surface. I really like using a tyvek sheet over the caps as they print. It allows air exchange and at the same time protects the area from contaminants as the print is making. A one square yard sheet will cover a whole lot of printing caps. You can get kite grade tyvek at www.intothewind.com In my opinion, it's far superior to the post office tyvek. It's thicker too. RR
