Opinions about Limewire?
    #5567303 - 04/28/06 03:41 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I use Soulseek for music but I was thinking about trying Limewire for videos.

From those that knows whaddya think?

Does it have spyware?

Anything lame about it?

Is it good for downloading vids?

No spyware, but it is considered "riskware" because of the possibility of d/l'ing dangerous files. All in all it's not a bad program, just be careful what you d/l with it, but I'm sure you already knew that.

Limewire is fine. If you only want to DL 1 song or 1 music video use limewire. For everything else use torrents.

limewire is a good program. i recommend scanning your files for viruses right after you d/l them though, you probably already knew that, rite?

I'm sure you are already using an AV. I hope those are not norton or mcaffee.

I use AVG and have had no problems. For malware use Prestpatrol, ad-aware and spybot.

If you know what you are doing use "hijack this!" and crap cleaner.

Oh, and you can DL zonealarm for free too (firewall). The pro version is worth the cost though.

I couldn't get limewire to compile properly on my computer, but on my old mac it worked really good.

I only use torrents though nowadays.

In terms of point-and-click p2p apps, Limewire is pretty good.

I find LimeWire is good for new releases and extremely fast downloads. However I use SoulSeek for rare songs I cannot find on LimeWire.

Porn site owners have flooded it and other p2p/torrent sites with fake .wmv and virus porn.

In general, no

While Limewire can be dead useful and faster, I prefer something safer like eMule

I've found the vids on Limewire have a less chance of downloading a virus

I use EMule to download things when I can't find a torrent. Limewire kept messing up on me but I haven't had any problems with EMule.

I need to start using torrents

But EMules worked so far

And I enjoy using the two days or so it takes to catch up on some reading or writing

It uses a LOT of memory if you have multiple downloads going. I just checked and it was using 253,000kb of RAM.

The following file-swappers are confirmed to have spyware or other unwanted parasites bundled into them:

Audiogalaxy
Imesh
OneMX
FreeWire
Exeem
BitTorrent Ultra
FileCroc
Kiwi Alpha
RockItNet
Warez P2P
KaZaa (offers a paid version without spyware)
Bearshare (offers a paid version without spyware)
Xolox (Currently retesting)
Morpheus (Older versions only. All third party bundles have been removed from Morpheus as of version 4.9.2. Current versions have an embedded banner ad but install no third party software)
Grokster (offers a paid version without spyware)
Blubster 2.x aka Piolet (Blubster 2.0 and higher and Piolet are adware and bundle other adware)
MediaSeek (MediaSeek Lite from the same company does not bundle any spyware or adware)
E-Donkey AKA Overnet (Versions prior to 1.2 available on June 1, '05 bundle adware. 1.2 is clean)
Computwin AKA FileNavigator (While it doesn't bundle adware or spyware, this product is itself adware, pops up a full page ad in Internet Explorer upon loading and claims to track computer usage in its license)
Ares (Official site offers a "Lite" version without the adware bundles)
Various BitTorrent Clients (See warning below about open source clients)
Limewire (The most current version of Limewire is reported to include spyware. LimeWire 4.9.28 is clean. Older and newer version may not be.)

I used to use suprnova.org and that was where I downloaded whatever the basic thing you need to run bittorrent(s?) but now that's been shut down and I don't know where to go to make the initial download if you know what I mean. From these replies, I take it bittorent is the way to go. Where is a good place to get started with bittorent. This is a new computer so all I have downloaded so far regarding p2p is soulseek.

Thanks again for all your help everyone.

a good bittorrent client is utorrent or ABC (yet)

a good place to get torrents is www.thepiratebay.org, www.isohunt.com, www.torrentspy.com or www.mininova.org. http://empornium.us is good for porn.

most of the best bittorrent trackers are private and invite-only

Oh that torrentspy one has some software I'd like.

Is downloading software any riskier?
