flow hood or flow hood alternative
    #5564814 - 04/27/06 10:05 PM (17 years, 10 months ago)

i have been considering building a flow hood and after pricing the HEPA filter and the fan i want to try to find an alternative. i do not have very much room to work with so size does matter. i was looking at http://www.mycosupply.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=PCOG01 and have been considering getting it... i know it is not the same thing but i feel that it would help keep my area pretty clean and that i could even use it as a flow hood... i have a glove box(that i made) that works but is kind of difficult to work with and if there are any solid plans for a nice glove box that would be awesome too...

any suggestions and information at all on construction to places to buy them would be awesome.

for beginners a flowhood isnt necessary at all and that ozone gen wont really do you good.

just get yourself a nice glovebox, costs you like from nothing to max 50$ for a top notch one
and itll do all you need.

search the boards a bit and youll find everything you need

try cost 20 bucks canadian max. or like mine totally free if you have a box duct tape kitchen gloves and some garbage bags. garbage bags are for sleeves for teh gloves so you can really get your arms in there. oh and plastic wrap for the top so you can see in.
its all very common househould stuff.

Another cheap alternative is to look for clear garbage bags. Just put a rubberband around your wrists and work inside the bag while wearing latex gloves. I take them into the mountains when I do cloning. They make a nice 50 cent glovebox.

to hold the bag closed around your arm. people do this in a dark bag to develop film.
nice and portable.

I get the idea, but how are you going to get the bag and rubberbands around both wrists when the garbage bag has only one opening?

Just use your teeth...lol It's not that hard. Actually, the rubber band is optional. I only use it when in the forest. If I'm in a room that has already been cleaned and the air sprayed with Oust, I just use the bag without the bands. All you really want is a small area free of drafts to do your work. It doesn't have to be a hermetic seal or anything.

i have a fine glove box... rubbermaid with thick rubber gloves mounted to two ports... i just would really like a flow hood but was seeing if there is anything a little cheaper and/or smaller. glove boxes are nice but i am really ready to move onto a flow hood. i hate storing the glove box and taking it in and out every day or so and cleaning it and all. it really does work pretty well... at this point i think i might just build a flow hood... any one know the best and cheapest place to get the parts? or one allready built?
