Substrate level lower after boiling jars....normal?
    #5566705 - 04/28/06 11:39 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Is it normal for the substrate level to lower after boiling? I filled the jars with substrate, very fluffy and airy, and topped them with dry verm, and then strerilized. Well when I took them out the substrate had condesed a bit and I couldn't quite get the syringe to the sub. I had to sterilize the area and take the lids off to inoculate.

Is this normal??

If you removed the lids, you're in deep trouble.

So you couldn't get your needle through your verm layer to the substrate itself? Either way, you would have been better off injecting through the lids. Removing them completely is a huge risk for contams even with a "sterile" environment.

it shrinks when boiling if you didnt put your foil on tight enough and water got in, mashing it down. whoops!
