Pinning
    #5566472 - 04/28/06 10:05 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

My casing has been in the FC for 5 days and i think its beginning to pin. This is my first grow so im not sure what to look for. The mycelium is mostly fuzzy but in some small areas its begging to turn a brighter white. There are no small black dots or anything. Is this what happens right before a pin forms or is my casing begging to overlay?

71F, 90% RH, FAE a few times daily

its normal to poke through in spots... overlay is when it pokes through everywhere, growing on top of your casing, rendering it basically pointless... if its coming through in a major way in only certain areas, you might want to look up patching.  this is basically laying down a little more casing in those areas to even it out, giving you a more even pinset.  not too neccessary depending on how uneven it may be and how anal you are.

before pins comes hyphal knots.  this is where the fuzz does seem to concentrate and make thicker white lumps.  there wont be black dots... the lumps will start to grow upward, and you'll start noticing a tiny little orangish/brownish cap forming at the tip... that there is a pin.  not all of them will turn to pins, but many will.  keep up those conditions and you'll see what pins look like in no time!

You should definitely take a look at Hyphae's pinning strategy for casings and the Hongus Tek. Awesome info. GL.
