ok so im geting ready to reuse a syringe that i got from spores101 a few weeks ago. now i know some say to boil ect ect. im planing tho to steralise this by sucking 5ml of alcohol into the syringe shake and let stand for a few mins, the needle im going to drop into a jar filled with alcohol aswell. once leting this dry is there any problem or is using alcohol to steralise this simply a bad idea?

Personally I don't like sucking up boiling water into the syringe. The times I did it, due to the fact that the water was boiling u get lots of air in the syringe as well and only half the space will get filled with water. In my opinion that kinda defeats the purpose cause half of the syringe doesnt even get touched by the boiling water and if you swish the water around to the other end of the syringe the water wont be boiling anymore by that point.
Soo, I do what I read in another post...wrap the syringe and needle in aluminum foil and throw them in the PC along with whatever else ur cooking in there. Dunno if the plastic will withstand an hour or longer PC session, but if you do it for 15-20 mins that should be good.

I'd wipe it down with alcohol (the needle). Maybe suck up some alcohol to fill the syringe, swish it around for a minute or two, then eject the alcohol. Then I would do the boiling water thing: suck up some boiling water and swish it around. Not so much for additional sterilization (I hesitate to call additional sterilization "overkill"....I just realized, as typing that, how much of a GOOD description "overkill" is for excessively sterilizing, though) as much as to clean off the insides of the syringe from the alcohol, seeing as how it can not evaporate into the air. That seems like it would make a great sterile syringe. I am not growing mushrooms(yet), but I definately think that that would work.

Alcohol needs to remain in contact for several minutes to kill contam spores. It won't kill bacterial endospores (then again, niether does boiling or even PC'ing). Hopefully you dont have any of those buggers in your syringe in the first place anyway! (it is unlikely, don't worry.) If you're going to sterilize with alcohol you'll have to fill it solid with alcohol and let sit a good 15 minutes. I find its way easier to just fill the syringe with water, boil some water in a pot with a rag on the bottom, and drop the whole water filled syringe needle, cap and all into the water for about 20 minutes. Simple and effective, and you can do tons of them at once. Hell if you aint got a kettle wide enough to accomodate a full syringe laying on its side, you can use a frying pan (still filled with water and a rag on bottom) with a lid even.

If you suck up the water, then let the needle sit in the water for a few seconds, the plundger will suck back in, pushing out the air inside of it, then you can suck up more water and repeat until you have a full syrings. once it's full, you can again leave the needle in the water and the water in the syrings will boil. But I do think your alcohol method will work

Have the syring already full of water when you put it in the pot of water. Bring the water to a boil and allow to boil for half an hour or so to make sure the water in the syringe has reached the boiling point. When ready to work, remove the syringe, squirt out the water and use. Flame sterilize the needle.
Alcohol is not a sterilizer and won't sterilize your syringe. RR
