Computer -> Sterio

Well i have about 1000 songs on my computer and the speakers arent the greatest. So, I was thinking why not hook it up with my sterio system which is putting out mad amps. What would be the best and safest way(for both computer and sterio) to hook these two together? Like what cords and which holes should I use.
Any help is greatly appreciated

see if your computer and receiver have a s/pdif jack.

You'll need two cables:
1: A double male 1/8"
2 Female 1/8" to RCA
Plug one end of the double male into the same hole you'd plug your speakers into, it's usually colored a light green on the back of sound cards. Plug the free end into the female end of your second cable and plug the RCA end of that cable into the back of your receiver. You may have to experiment with different inputs of your receiver.
You can also use a splitter if you want to use both your computer speakers AND your stereo.

Do they make any type of sound card with composite output? (e.g. the "red and white" cables). I'd look into that, or perhaps even a step up (digital coax, optical). Not sure whether they even make those types of things for computers though.

That one might work well for what you need it for. Or perhaps an external one, I think those have the 'red and white' cable outputs, but i'm not positive the link to one is below.

Those links are what I was thinking of. To get the 5.1 (or 7.1) sound out of them I'm pretty sure you'd need a digital out (digital coax or optical). That would definetly be a huge improvement over a single out.

I've had mine hooked up for a couple years now, but when I was originally looking, I found 1/8" male-male to be pretty expensive at the time for anything considerable in length.
I alternatively used:
1x --> Male 1/8" to RCA Male 2x --> Female RCA to Female RCA speaker cables.
1,000 songs sounds like just the start of what'll start to accumulate... as your collection grows, I would possibly suggest buying an older pc (as long as it can run your music player without skipping), putting a large hard drive in, and dedicating a machine to jukebox/multimedia functionality.

I should also mention that the OP doesn't seem like he's looking for the latest/greatest. He's not an audiophile, he just wants something that will work and produce a decent quality sound...
Pretty much anything is going to be an improvement over the pc speakers, so the adapter/RCA should be adequate for him. *However* if you're looking for the best sound, go splurge on a sound card that has the proper output for your needs.

Yeah, there's definately more than one way to go about it. I don't think you'd want to go too long with an 1/8" cable since the smaller gauge is prone to signal loss pretty easily. In my cable chain, the double male 1/8" is only about 6" long and only cost a few bucks, most of the length is in the 1/8" to RCA cable. Everything acquired at Radio Shack.

if you're going to spend a decent amount of cash on the input/output... I think it's worth mentioning that the file type of your music will have a considerable impact on the quality of the sound coming out of your speakers.
a small level of compression may not be blatantly apparent on regular computer speakers, but when you run it through some quality speakers it can make a big difference.
