Need Identification ( New Species? )
    #5564874 - 04/27/06 10:22 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I found this mushroom deep inside a native forest in New Zealand growing on a substrate of decaying forest matter mixed with moss.

From the umbo to the base it is 210 mm long ( 8.4 inches ).

48 mm cap diamater ( around 2 inches ).

Has an annular ring 45 centimetres down from the tip of the umbo.

Stem is whiteish or cremeish.

Gills are not attached to the stem.

White spore print.

Stem snaps easily and makes a crispy sound and seems to fibrouse.

Cap has scales on it which congregate more on the top and has a rubbery texture.

Here are the gills:

Wot I find interesting is the large size. Most mushrooms that grow in New Zealand forests are only a few cm tall, with the exception of disk fungi growing on trees and giant puffballs. Surely someone could identify this as its large size makes it stand out easily.

EDIT: It may be Leucoagaricus rubrotinctus.

Hahahaha!!! There is absolutely no reason to make the assumption that this mushroom may be a 'new species'...I would agree that it looks like a possible lepiota and those are not too uncommon at this time of year. But hey maybe you're right.

Yeah, well I'm too used to seeing all these generic small mushrooms - Galerinas, Subs, Pan Foe's (in fields) rarely more than a few centimetres tall.

Then I go into the bush further north and stumble upon this lone mushroom that I've never seen before in the middle of nowhere that is gigantic :mushroom2:.

Can't blame a guy for trying, though. One day I'll find a new species. Still can't figure out wot to name it though and I'm not sure if there's some sort of Criteria that must be met.... Most likely can't name it after Blonde women.
