A lot of people recommend cooking amanitas so that all the ibotenic acid turns into muscimol. I assumed this means that ibotenic acid is bad (yes, I know it's a poison in high doses, and yes, I know amanitas do not have enough to kill you) and that ibotenic acid does nothing to your brain.
However, I recently read a trip report on this site where the guy ends it by saying "screw muscimol, it's ibotenic acid all the way!" or somesuch.
So does ibotenic acid give a different effect, if any?

Yuck, ibotenic acid is what makes you horribly sick from Amanitas and gives all the nasty effects. By heating the Amanita muscaria to just under 200* and allowing it to dry to a cracker consistency will have changed most of the ibotenic acid into the more desireable compound muscimol.
