Hey i just found a small mushrooms growing in the woods today. It was located at the base of a tree where the leaves had falen and there was a decayed log next to it, I personally dont think that it is at all active. It was about 5inches tall and the cap is about an inch and a half in diameter, and the cap is a shade of darker brown in the middle and gets lighter as it goes outwards. It has a very stout stem and bruises slightly brown when it is squeezed. Heres the pics .

I bet it's Pluteus cervinus, although the caps looks a little orange for this guess, my central Texas varieties often show a little more color than the book describes. Heres the description:
"pertaining to deer", usually drab brown cap, with darker spot in the center. On very close inspection the dark spot consists of tiny dark hairs. Gills are crowded and white when young and free from stem. Emerges from decaying wood.Spore print is salmon to pink.. To confirm, break cap and smell, should have a radish aroma..Edible but taste like nothing. Cap dia-2-6". Stalk height-2-5". All from Metzler and Metzler, Texas Mushrooms. My varietes have more color like yours. Just a good guess, but don't eat the damn thing.....the douche.

White gills are not always a sign of something being deadly.
There are edibles have white gills.
As far as suspected actives go, white gills are not really a good sign.
