I'm with Darcho on this one.
I bet when we have a fully integrated electronics system ported to our brains ala Matrix (though less intensely ficticious) we will be able to "plug-in" software that causes us to trip. This is all most likely way ahead in the future, if at all feasible.

someone will find every chemical/drug in existance that makes you feel good, blissful and retarded and cram them into one pill (with some addicting chemicals also), and sell them in 5 packs and 10 gram powder form in viles.

hopefully a mix of sonic / visual pulses will one day be able to trigger the same effects as drugs. for instance, a certain frequency that would cause your brain to create DMT.. ?
you said future right?

Street drugs of the future..
Pot is here to stay I think. As for psychedelics there is no demand greater than what Shrooms can supply, so the most prominent Psychedelic will be either shrooms or isolates thereof. What will happen to Shrooms in the coming 10-20 years will make the LSD of the 60s look like a rehersal
MDMA will stay popular for its properties and lack of a replacement drug.
You'll probably see synthetic cocaine analogs with far higher potency emerge, such as a 4-fluoro substitution in the benzoic acid ring. There will always be methamphetamine, but likely meth-cat will be big too.
I saved the worst for last. The drug market will get flooded by ultrapotent fentanyl derivatives (an opioid analgesic) sold and misrepresented as anything all of the time.
Taking drugs will become more dangerous than it has been before, because poorly made fentanyl analog dosage units can kill you even if laid on a blotter.
These drugs are unbelievably potent with up to a million doses per gram.

Many people will die and many more will have near fatal OD's and get terrible addiction issues. It is a cruel thing to say but the Fentanyl analogs will make haphazard drugtakers an endangered species.
I am very worried about the Fentanyl revolution, and it has already begun. In the 1980s it briefly surfaced and laid over 1.000 people dead. In eastern Europe and Russia Fentanyl drugs (under the street name such as 'Krokodil' - Crocodile) are steadily on the increase and running out of control.
These are drug trends as I see them.

Shrooms will always be around. They're easy to grow, can be found in MANY places, and offer soo much in their experiences. The law isn't cracking down on them and seems to have a mentality closer to "Well, if you have them we're gonna take'em, but you probably don't have them so we probably wont bother". Weed will be around unless some chemical is made to act as a substitute, or possibly some sort of modified plant. Or the weed could just get more potent... Although in the far future I find it hard to believe it'll still be illegal...
LSD will remain a bit of an underdog due to all the myths and rumors, but I think once the government gets more honest with drugs (which over enough time with enough pressure will happen... eventually) it will regain popularity.

Do you really think the government is going to "get more honest" as time goes on? Short of a total regime change and social/political reformation, I'm not too hopeful on that front.
Considering the state of the world as it stands today, it seems more likely that the drugs of the future will be radiation treatments or vaccines.

synthetics are the drug of the future for obvious reasons. Mostly your research chemicals. In the time line of drugs however, MDMA is our drug of the future. And if Shulgin has his way he'll discover our "perfect drug" of the future.

There's been a lot of talk of legalizing marijuana, politicians are changing their opinions to win votes... People want marijuana, politicians want votes... Granted it'll take a LOT of time and change before they're honest about it... But the first steps are being taken

Phenethylamine derivatives with potencies higher than LSD , already a few around ... already got a few of my own SWIM might like to make & test someday. Most are based around difuran-4-yl additions on 1,2 and 4,5. Potential dimers. Triflouros in place of heavy halogens (although I'd prefer heavies because they can more readily be radiation tags for neuropharmacology research). Phenethylamine-tryptamine hybrids. It's all in the works .
Yup fentanyl derivatives are getting more and more rediculously potent. Mass deaths will ensue (re fentanyl).

Anyone ever seen Serial Experiments Lain? The drug they have in there.. it's actually a bunch of nano-machines that emite frequencies to the brain, and eventually get digested by the body and purged out.
Seems feasible if you're into nanotech

I have that boxed set. Trippy show, and I loved it before I got into drugs.
I just hope there's a drug of the future that produces full-on hallucinations with very little change to physical feeling. Only an inkling of euphoria (so as to ensure a good trip) but nothing heavy, lots of hallucinations.
I'd really like to be able to program a trip. Select certain characteristics. Sort of like whoever mentioned waves that cause your brain to create DMT or whatever.

This seems dangerously addictive to me. People re-living memories of family members or loved ones that they lost long ago. People would wither away to a drug like this.

While the development of future drugs will be hypothesis driven, their discovery will be somewhat "accidental". Taking a drug and substituting rings and molecules is a good start, but you never really know what you are going to get until you take it. More importantly, is "why" two drugs with basically the same structure can produce such different effects. It will be an exciting and scary development when we finally figure out this ominous "why". Keep in mind we are still in the dark as to how hallucinogens work.

Programmable Electro-Mechanical Molecular Shape Shifting, Brain Chemistry Altering Nano-bot "upgrades".... Pain, anxiety, and depression will be things of the past, and emotions will be under the full control of the "user's" wants/needs at the push of a button....
By that time, people will be able to upload and download recordings of actual experiences, and share them with the world....
As something like this would of course be governed by political officials, the underground market would become the place for specific upgrade enhancements, mods, and "questionable/deviant" programs....
Things that would cause major problems and drawbacks that are inherent to electronic hardware/software: Failure, the "Blue Screen of Death" , viruses, trojans, hackers/hijackers, identity theft, subliminal influences, experience implants for framing/punishment, etc etc....
