TiT's and FC question
    #5562887 - 04/27/06 01:42 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

So, I managed a successful first grow a few months ago with one flush at least. My subsequent flush (only managed a second) was laughable at best. I don't think I had enough air exchange and/or humidity going on.

I'm heading outta town end of June and have my jars ready to inoculate with the Golden Teacher strain tonight. I've got a basic TiT setup right now with water and a submersible aquarium heater on the bottom. That part worked well.

Now, for the fruiting chamber...here's what I'm thinking.

I'm going to use a big tub on the bottom and get a smaller tub that sits comfortably on top but doesn't float so I don't have to worry about the whole tie strings deal or anything like that if I want to adjust the temperature. There should be 4-5 inches depth of water in the tub below it which I assume is more than enough to produce heat with the heater.

Last time I did casings and while they were alright...nowhere near the flushes that I see around here. So, if I stay with casings, could I cut some holes on the sides of the inner and stuff with polyfil for air exchange? I assume I'd also need to cut holes in the same places on the outer tub to keep air flow.

With those holes, I'm thinking of using perlite for humidity again. I'll have to install some sort of drip shield I'm sure otherwise condensation will fall from the lid into the casings. How often do you need to rehydrate perlite? How much water should you generally use to hydrate the perlite in the first place.

I'd like something as close to automated as I can get. I don't mind a daily misting if it's needed but I assume the perlite will take care of that unless the polyfil holes allow moisture to escape.

Can someone help me out here?

Why do you plan on making your FC a tub in tub? Is it that cold in your house that you actually have to heat the FC? Mushies fruit in temps from like 65-80. Get rid of the whole outter tub filled with water thing.

If you want air exchange, you could always get one of those cheap $6-7 aquarium air pumps from wal-mart and have that thing run while you're gone.

For the perlite, before you put it in the FC, just put it into a big bowl or something and pour in a bunch of water. Stir it up real well, then drain all the excess water. What you've got left is properly hydrated perlite and it will last you through the entire grow, no need to rehydrate.

If you have anyway to do bulk or really big casings, then take skeletor's advice and read up on mono/double tubs.
