I am of the opinion that anyone who deals with major labels, mainstream radio, and MTV these days are sell-outs.

Green Day has always had a fairly accesable pop-punk sound, and dont think they have really changed all that much since their ealier days, except improved song writing skills, play their instruments better, and have matured quite a bit. I havnt really followed them in ages, but I dont think they have drasticaly changed all that much - just an improvement and evolotion. Its not like they are now pumping out Creed-esq God-songs to make record sales.
I dont think that dealing with radio/MTV/etc makes you a sellout either. It gets them exposure, it gets them money, and having the money allows them to continue focusing on creating music, and not needing to hold part-time jobs to make ends meet and pay the bills.
Now, lets say -- in the early days Green Day sounded like, Minor Threat, then out of the blue changed their sound to a pop-punk consumer-radio friendly for the sake of getting a deal : then yes, that'd be selling out.
But to me, they have always had that pop-punk commerical friendly sound, even before they hit it big.

i think their insturments were best in their first two albums...while they were still on an indie label(1039 smoothed out slappy hours and Kerplunk) Dry Ice has a wicked guitar solo, No One Knows has an amazing bass line...some other good songs are Road to Acceptance, Android, Christie Road, an Only of You....they had alot of love songs back then but that doesn't make it pop-punk (pop-punk = garbage)

they sold out to their original fans, and by becoming polished punks. personally, when i compare then and now they look very different, and the fan base is different. i don't think their style has changed too much, except for the general subject of the music.

They never bought in, so how can they sell out?
If propagandhi were to sign to BMG and wear eyeliner, I'd have issues with them.... Greenday's always been just what they are.

Who gives a shit if some band sells out? As long as their music sounds good, that's all that matters...and Green Day is still putting out pretty damn good songs.

What makes you think Green Day's opinions are "Mindless political statements"? You should be giving them a lot of credit for being one of the few mainstream bands to put lyrics of any social import whatsoever in their songs.
I don't like Green Day's music anymore, but god damn it was refreshing to know that a band in the mainstream made a rock song that rebels against something that's actually important.

You guys just don't understand the power of speech. People are influenced by what they see and hear, especially from the mainstream media. Advertisers invest millions of dollars in this fact by purchasing 30 second ads in The Super Bowl every year. These advertisers understand the power of speech very well.
Green Day definitely influenced people with the anti-Bush messages in their songs because millions of people heard the songs many times. I salute them for doing it.

o you say you hate that band 'cause they sold out. And you sold back all your records is that what it's all about. Now listen up you fuckin' punk the songs are still the same. 'Cause others learn to like them doesn't make them fuckin' lame. You're wrong. You're so wrong. You're fuckin wrong... Now run the fuck along. Shame on all those bands, yeah the ones who play for cash. The ones that count their money as they sit back and they laugh. Now don't you get too angry with all those KROQ fans. With no time they'll bore and be searching for new bands. You sold out.. They sold out. We'd sell out, there's no fuckin' doubt. So you got it figured out and you know it all. Some of those bands were punk back when you were still hanging at the mall. It's called respect and you don't have it and probably never will. I know 'cause I was once like you just fighting against my will.

If you are an artists and dont sellout then you should be fuckin crucified.
Not only that, Those guys have been around for a long time, music styles changes, people grow older. Nobody is the same as they were 10 years ago, even five years ago. It would be hurting if these guys were still trying to make a song song that sounded 97% the same as basket case.
