Bioluminescent Mushrooms

Hey everyone! I remember awhile back seeing a guide on bioluminescent mushrooms (I believe they were shipped with some growing kit). Anyone have any idea of what species and strain they may have been?
I think it'd be nice to have some "show" mushrooms that I could put on a kitchen table or something and just have there to look pretty. Also, if anyone has grown them before, any advice you can offer? How long do the bioluminescent compounds stay active? Are they just phosphors that die relatively quickly after the mushroom does?

Those are 2 different mushroom species. Anyone know which is brighter? Dragon

Panellus stipticus is brighter than Armillariella mellea. Also, only the mycelium glows with the Armillariella. The fruits don't glow at all.
Neither of these species are blinding, but the fruits of the Pannellus are fairly bright and the mycelium less so.

How large should the pan stips get WM? I grew some out two or three years ago, but the fruits were only about 3/4" tall. I just started some more. Your several year old mycelial syringe took right off on agar. Kudo's to you on that. RR

They are pretty small. 3/4 inch is actually pretty good. I have also noticed that the strain is extremely stable in liquid. Not all species/strains are so robust. My one attempt at germinating spores of this species failed for unknown reasons.
I think I have a source of the Australian Ghost fungus (Omphalotus nidiformis) and hope to have it in hand very soon. If it grows easily, it should be of a more satisfying size than the Panellus.

What kind of nutrient solution would be good for a liquid culture for pan stip? Would regular maple syrup work? Dragon

a good liquid solution can be malt-dextrose. the mycelium will over-grow the surface and after a period of time, mushrooms will popp up!
the mycelium glows very bright on barley malt.

Is that a guess or from experience? I've never seen mushrooms pop up on LC. RR

it works for panellus stipticus but not for all luminous mushrooms!

I just got a trade of Panellus Stipticus from Blue Helix, and he was growing it in 20g malt extract, 20g dextrose per liter of water.
If you have a plate of this around you should set it in your bathroom or some place you wander to when you wake up. I've had one of my Panellus plates in there for over a week, and it's still the first thing I check out in the morning, heh. With your eyes dialated from being asleep and away from light I can clearly make out the morphology of the plate (thick/thin spots). I also sacrificed a tube to see if blowing into it would glow better. Luciferase reacts with oxygen to luminesce so I was hoping for a good effect, but being as I just woke up I didn't see a mind-blowing difference. At the time I thought it was a bit like a coal being rekindled with a slight increase of luminescence, but who knows...
