i think cleaning with alcohol is a good idea... but! if you still want a other method, you can but a UV lamp, and let the petri dishes exposed to it... it will also help to clan your work place at the same time...
UV needs about 4 hour to be effective, and u UV radiation is bad for you, so you don't have to expose to it...

Where can you get a germicidal UV lamp? Thats not really the sort of thing they keep at walmart or home depot is it?
I'd think if it was more people would be using it

The petri dishes are sterile when you open the bag. Anything you do to 'clean' them will only make them dirty. RR

I'm actually interested in this because a friend of a friend borrowed some petri dishes from work to let me start using agar. However, years of use in the bio lab, I highly doubt they're still sterile.
I was planning on just boiling them in a bleach solution, then reboiling in distilled water to get any bleach residue off. Don't have a pressure cooker quite yet sine I'm saving up for an all american without a seal (my mother was almost killed by a pressure cooker when the seal went, so she has banned them from her house).

thanks for all the info. I bought them of ebay! came in a bag and sounded to be sterilized. But I have left the bag open for 5 6 days now so cant risk it!
Yeah uv wouldn't help much as its hard to find it! PCing them is wrong too cause I did it and they were melted!
The reason I am asking this question is I have seen some pics on this site that some ppl put the normal vermiculate and rye substrate in the petri dishes and I was wondering how they sterilized them.
I think Ill do alcohol but thats crap taht I have to make a glove box!
Have a friend in hospital so i may ask him;)

not all petri dishes come sterilized... and if u want to re-use them, u still need to clean them up...
