INFESTED WITH WORMS - SAFE TO EAT?

Had lots of rain recently here in Auckland, went hunting in the weekend and found a nice stash of shrooms (P. Subaeruginosa). After a few days they had not been dried out entirely and a few sneaky worms were living underneath the caps! They look a lot like small maggots. These wee beasties had a field day & now our shrooms are quite nasty... I doubt we'll eat them, but I am very curious to know if they actually affect your trip -- whether they ruin the active compund and/or could cause poisoning??? I am considering putting the whole lot into simmering-hot water for 15mins or so, then putting it through strainer -- which would hopefully kill any worms and extract the psilocybin into the water (without too much loss in potency). I'll throw out all the remaining solids.

Well they're not harmful to your health but wormed out shrooms are generally just pretty nasty. But yes the method you described will result in a safe and not too unpleasant salvage job of them. Best bet is to only pick ones that aren't too old and mangey, and dry them out asap if you're not ingesting them on the spot.

Yeah, if you were to just boil them and strain I think that would be perfectly acceptable and should extract most of the active compounds. I can however vouch for the fact that if you remove the maggots from fresh shrooms and blend them with juice that you will trip and shouldn't really have any negative effects from the worms whatsoever. Though admittedly the thought alone is kind of gross...

The worms are nothing to worry about most of the time. The fact that the mushroom has worms might mean that it's rotting. If it is rotting, it IS possible to get food poisoning from rotten mushrooms.

a food dehydrator will dry most mushrooms within 24 hours. the faster you get the maggoty Shrooms dried, than the less damage the maggots will have time to do.

I usually avoid ones that are at that point, even if it's just an edible that i can cook or something. Personal preference I guess.

"is it insect-ridden?" is usually one of the questions is ask when sorting my batch after picking. you could probably boil/strain the wormy ones with no ill effects, but i always throw them out.
try to avoid picking the ones with bugs on them, once they're in your bag they'll chew on a lot of the uninfested mushrooms you throw in there.

Yeah I would agree...I personally don't pick ones that even have any hint of insects. It's just not worth it. I found in the past that the worst trips I've had were on wormy subs. I think they just get a little huckery. But physically 'safe'.

Make sure you dry your fresh shrooms out if you're not going to be ingesting them within a few days. Once they dry out, the maggots shrivel up and die (yay!) and tiny dried maggots aren't really going to affect the taste As someone else mentioned, it could be that your shrooms have rotted. If they have a very rank smell, then you can bet that they're rotting away.
