How to make Poly-fill-Tyvek lids

How I do poly-fill and Tyvek for an all-in-one lid.
From various sources on the Shroomery, I have put together a technique for making poly-fill lids for grain jars. Here it is.
-Begin with the traditional canning lids that come with Mason jars. -Drill a hole in the center of your lid. I used a 3/8? bit. 1/4 inch works, too.

-Next, take a wad of poly-fill and pull it through the hole.
-Then, cut off the excess fluff from the under side of the lid.
-The next step needs a 6?X6? square of Tyvek. The Post Office is kind enough to give Tyvek to amateur mycologists for free. Cut off the corners and set your lid?s band in the center. (Make sure any colored spots are up at this point. That way you will have a plain white top you can write on.)
-Fold the Tyvek over the threads to the inside of the band. Begin with one corner and move counter-clockwise with your folds so they correspond to the lid as it is tightened.
-Place the lid with poly-fill in the band, capturing the Tyvek and holding it in place.
-Now it can be screwed onto the jar. This will fit the lid tightly into the band and keep it all together as one piece. Once out of the pressure cooker, it can be written on with a sharpie; date, species strain, etc.

Recycled jars (and lids) can be used, too. With these modifications to the steps above, here?s how. In the pictures, an empty spaghetti sauce jar is used.
-Your 6 X 6 piece of Tyvek should be cut into a circle with a diameter approximately one inch wider than the chosen lid. Use your lid as a template.
-Place the lid in the palm and fold the Tyvek into the treads of the lid. Since this lid is smaller than the Mason jar lids, this takes a little dexterity.
-Then, while holding the lid and Tyvek, place the combo on the jar and tighten. This will help put the Tyvek in the right place.
-Tightened once, the lid will keep its Tyvek in place pretty well.

This method makes the lids easier to work with. No rubber-bands to deal with. You can also use them more than once. I?ve used the same lids for at least three different grain projects consecutively with no problems. (PC?d for 60 min.) If a jar contaminates, though, the lid should not be used again. But it?s so easy to make these; you can replace the Poly-fill and Tyvek with ease.

nice but there seriously i sno need to use poly along with tyvek - either one does the job alone perfectly.
also, when using tyvek you simply screw the lid on the tyvek, eliminating needs for rubberbands.

Guess I like to be thorough. Kinda like "double baggin' it". I started with just using Tyvek in place of the lid and screwed the band down on the jar. I kept getting contams. So I use poly-fill. My poly-fill kept getting messed or pulled out. (neat freak) So, I kept the Tyvek to hold the poly-fill.

Exactly! I've never used rubber-bands with Tyvek. I tried covering my poly-fill with a coffee filter, but I like the Tyvek because it doesn't rip.

This is a silly question, but where did you get those tyvek enevelopes from the post office? I'm about to go later this afternoon and something like that would work great - but all of the envelopes I've seen there are just padded paper.

From a functional standpoint , it doesn't really matter . Some peeps put it on top to use as a label . I , myself , put it under the matal lid .

The Tyvek Priority Mail Envelopes are usually next to the paper ones. If not ask the clerk, he/she will be able to point them out. Or they might keep them behind the counter.
Also, I think the other couriers (FedEx, etc.) have Tyvek envelopes, too.

Hmm, when I first got a PC, I set aside a jar of PCed WBS with a tyvek filter. It's over 5 months old now, still contam free, starting to dry out.

I was wondering if you could use pieces of a tyvek suit? I have access to these and it seems to be the same as what is shown here.

Please check the dates before replying to old threads. This thread is almost 1 year(s) old to the day. I know you saw the text advising you how old this thread was before you replied. You are far better served starting a new thread and referencing this in the text.
I'll leave it open for now.

I'm about to use a tyvek jumpsuit to make lids . I know they keep everything out and let what's inside breathe ... slightly I had to wear them for three years screen printing so we will see how they work. I think I'm just going to microphone tape the tyvek over the polyfill.
